EAP Networks for Therapists: Which Programs Should You Join?

By George Ruan • October 22, 2026

Reviewed October 22, 2026. Part 1 of Bomi’s EAP series for US therapy practice owners.

An employee assistance program, or EAP, is an employer-sponsored benefit that can connect employees and eligible family or household members with short-term counseling and other support. For a therapy practice, an EAP can be a referral source and an introduction to clients who have never tried counseling. Joining the right network means understanding both the brief-care assignment and what happens if the client needs more help.

ComPsych describes its EAP as assessment and brief counseling, with services beyond the EAP potentially paid through other benefits. That scope matters: an employer mental-health platform may also provide clinical treatment and health-plan access, so identify the actual service you are contracting to deliver. See ComPsych’s EAP informed consent.

EAP and employer mental-health networks to investigate

This is a starting list, not a ranking or a promise that a network is accepting your license, location or specialty. Apply through the provider route and ask which employer populations the proposed agreement would let you serve.

Is there demand for my location, availability and clinical specialties?

Provider entry points: ComPsych; Carelon EAP; Lyra contract opportunities; Spring Health; Modern Health; AllOne Health; CuraLinc network overview; Magellan’s EAP welcome guide. Optum, Evernorth and Aetna manuals are linked in the authorization installment below.

Optum is an important contracting distinction: its current Emotional Wellbeing Solutions page says all credentialed and contracted network therapists may provide these services. Updating EAP directory visibility is encouraged; it is not an additional contracting requirement. The member still needs authorization.

Choose for the caseload you actually want

Start with two or three networks that fit your open appointments, populations and preferred working model. Ask about local demand rather than assuming a national network produces a national stream of referrals to every therapist. An adolescent specialist with afternoon appointments and an adult therapist with daytime telehealth openings may have very different results on the same panel.

  • Request the fee schedule and required session length before deciding. A salary range for an employed clinician is not an independent-practice reimbursement rate.

  • Confirm whether each treating clinician and the practice tax ID need approval. Ask explicitly about associates or supervised clinicians; the supervisor’s participation alone is not proof of eligibility.

  • Ask who handles scheduling, authorizations, notes, claims or invoices, and payment follow-up.

  • Get the rules for continuing care with the same therapist. If continuation must stay inside a platform or requires care-manager approval, build that into your plan.

Use the referral opportunity without depending on a conversion

A useful business rule is to accept an EAP contract only if providing the authorized short-term service makes sense on its own. Some clients will finish their goals within the benefit. Others may need ongoing therapy, but they may choose a different clinician or need a lower-cost option. Future visits are a possibility, not guaranteed revenue.

Program-specific EAP claim filing guides

Use the guide for the program on the authorization. Each separates documented submission routes and code requirements from details that need the referral or provider agreement. A clearinghouse payer listing proves transaction connectivity, not coverage for a particular EAP case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to join every EAP to get referrals?

No. Begin with networks that fit your license, schedule and desired caseload, then assess actual referrals and collections before expanding.

Does being in network with Cigna, Aetna or Optum automatically include the EAP?

Optum says all credentialed and contracted network therapists may provide Emotional Wellbeing services without special certification; member authorization is still required. For Aetna and Evernorth, confirm the EAP participation arrangement rather than assuming ordinary health-plan participation includes it.

Are Lyra, Spring Health and Modern Health identical to traditional EAPs?

No. Employer mental-health offerings can combine different services and payment arrangements. Confirm whether your work is employer-sponsored counseling, health-plan treatment, coaching or another service.
