Modern Health Billing: Session Invoices, Coding and HPI

By George Ruan • October 22, 2026

Public guidance reviewed October 22, 2026. US therapy-practice billing; documentation review, not a live claim submission.

Modern Health’s provider workflow centers on invoicing sessions in its Dashboard. Some members also have Health Plan Integration, or HPI, for eligible continued care. The key billing decision is which type of session you are invoicing, rather than selecting a generic EAP payer ID for every appointment.

Sections

Submit a session invoice in the Full Dashboard

Modern Health’s June 2026 instructions say sessions must be scheduled in advance. After the session ends, find it in Sessions or under the member’s Clients profile, open Submit Invoice, complete the form and submit. Record the correct attendance and modality; keep the confirmation. Modern Health invoice instructions.

Treat the invoice as the reimbursement request and retain a local accounting reference if you use another EHR. Do not let an externally generated insurance claim become a second request for the same program-funded session. If your contract uses the Invoicing Only Dashboard, use its assigned instructions rather than assuming the Full Dashboard screens are identical.

Attendance status changes the billing outcome

Modern Health’s Session Invoicing FAQs say Completed, No Show and Late Cancellation cannot be invoiced until the scheduled session time has passed. Cancelling too early can mark it as an ordinary cancellation instead. The FAQ also directs providers to manage Modern Health bookings on the platform. Session Invoicing FAQs.

When something looks unpaid, compare the appointment, attendance status and submitted invoice before changing the record. A session that was never held, a held session not yet invoiced and a submitted invoice awaiting payment are three different situations. Correct the actual discrepancy instead of marking every entry Completed.

What about an EDI destination or HJ modifier?

The published Dashboard instructions establish platform invoicing, not one universal provider-to-clearinghouse 837P destination. They also do not establish a universal HJ requirement. Do not invent an EAP payer ID or force 99404-HJ into a form that requests different clinical information.

Modern Health’s coding guidance says the CPT and diagnosis should accurately reflect the member’s needs, provider license and service delivered, with supporting documentation. It is a general coding primer, not a claim that every listed code is payable under every employer benefit. Modern Health Provider Coding Guidance.

HPI continued-care sessions need a separate check

The August 2026 HPI FAQ explains that eligible members may continue therapy beyond their employer-sponsored allotment through health-plan arrangements involving cost sharing. Confirm the member’s HPI eligibility and the relevant invoice requirements before scheduling that next category of care. Health Plan Integration FAQs.

Where the HPI form requests CPT and diagnosis information, supply the supported clinical values and follow the platform’s current instructions. Do not assume a session still uses employer-funded benefits just because the therapist, video room and booking interface are unchanged. Explain the verified cost-sharing change to the client before treatment under the new benefit.

Reconcile the submitted sessions to payment

Compare the dates, attendance categories and invoice status with your payment record. Preserve the invoice confirmation and any support reference when requesting a correction. Ask provider support about a missing invoice or unmatched deposit; no universal provider filing deadline or payment guarantee is established by the public instructions cited here.

Compare EAP networks or review authorization and session-limit checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Modern Health clinicians send every EAP visit as an 837P claim?

The published provider process described here is Dashboard invoicing. A downstream health-plan arrangement does not by itself instruct a clinician to file a second independent claim.

Why is the Modern Health Submit Invoice button missing before the appointment ends?

The public instructions say it appears after the scheduled session time ends. Check the appointment and attendance workflow before treating this as a payment-system failure.

Sources and scope

Use the cited program and transaction-specific instructions with your current referral and agreement. Clearinghouse listings establish connectivity, not authorization or a guarantee of payment.
