BHSO and BH-ASO describe different arrangements

HCA describes Behavioral Health Services Only as managed care coverage for behavioral health. Its BH-ASO guidance describes regional crisis and other funded services. This guide was checked October 9, 2026. For a “bhso washington” search, start by distinguishing the member’s coverage from the regional organization’s service responsibilities.

HCA: Apple Health managed care and BHSO

Integrated managed care combines medical and behavioral coverage

HCA says Apple Health managed care coordinates physical and behavioral health care. Our recommended intake record identifies the member’s assigned plan for the visit date, then records the responsible authorization and claim workflow. Use the existing enrollment guide below for clinician and group participation requirements.

BHSO is a behavioral-health-only managed care plan

HCA says eligible clients with Apple Health coverage without a managed care plan can select a BHSO plan; HCA automatically enrolls clients who do not select one. Our recommendation is to read the actual behavioral health assignment rather than treating medical FFS coverage as proof that the therapist should submit directly to state FFS.

BH-ASOs provide regional crisis access

HCA’s BH-ASO fact sheet describes crisis services available regardless of insurance or income, including regional crisis lines, mobile crisis response, and involuntary-treatment functions. Our recommendation is to keep the regional crisis pathway readily available while separately confirming who pays for routine scheduled therapy.

Non-crisis BH-ASO services depend on funding and eligibility

The fact sheet says BH-ASOs may provide certain non-crisis mental health or substance-use services to low-income people not eligible for Apple Health, within available resources and other eligibility criteria. Do not assume that being uninsured creates an unlimited outpatient therapy benefit or automatically establishes a private practice’s payment arrangement.

Use the official region map and current contract resources

HCA publishes a regional BH-ASO map. Our suggested referral handoff records the relevant region, requested service, receiving organization, and unresolved eligibility or authorization questions. Confirm current contacts through the regional organization before relying on a saved directory entry.

Verify the actual service arrangement before billing

HCA’s maintained model-contract page separates IMC/BHSO and BH-ASO contracts and links current versions. Our recommended payer inquiry identifies the member’s dated coverage, service, practitioner, setting, and contract. Ask which organization authorizes and pays that service instead of choosing a claim route from an acronym alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BHSO the same as BH-ASO?

No. BHSO is behavioral-health-only managed care coverage; a BH-ASO administers regional crisis and other funded services.

Does medical FFS coverage mean therapy always bills state FFS?

Check the member’s behavioral health assignment, including BHSO, and the service-specific instructions.

Does a BH-ASO guarantee payment for uninsured outpatient therapy?

No. HCA describes non-crisis services as subject to available resources and eligibility criteria; confirm the specific arrangement.
