KanCare Credentialing: KMAP Enrollment vs MCO Approval
By George Ruan • October 9, 2026
Last updated: October 9, 2026.
KanCare credentialing starts with KMAP provider enrollment, but state approval does not finish the health plan’s network process. Healthy Blue explicitly says KMAP approval does not guarantee participation in its network. Track state enrollment and plan participation separately. Healthy Blue Kansas provider manual, June 2026

Which KanCare MCOs are current?
As of October 9, 2026, KDHE lists Healthy Blue Kansas, Sunflower State Health Plan, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Kansas as the KanCare managed care organizations (MCOs). Use the member’s actual assignment when choosing which network to pursue. KDHE KanCare and Medicaid overview
What happened to Aetna Better Health of Kansas?
Aetna says it stopped serving KanCare members on January 1, 2025. An old Aetna KanCare contract or guide is therefore not a current enrollment route. Historical claims questions belong with the transition resources for the relevant service dates. Aetna Kansas transition notice
How KMAP sends a network request
Healthy Blue directs providers to the KMAP Enrollment Wizard, where selecting Healthy Blue or another MCO initiates a contracting and credentialing request. Already-enrolled providers can request an additional MCO through Manage My Information → MCO Network, according to the wizard’s public instructions. KMAP Provider Enrollment Wizard

Healthy Blue and Sunflower: finish the plan process
Healthy Blue says the chosen MCOs are notified and initiate contracting or credentialing as needed. Sunflower’s FAQ separately requires its credentialing and a KMAP ID for contracting or payment. Treat a submitted request as a work item, not an effective network date. Healthy Blue: join our network Sunflower credentialing requirements
UnitedHealthcare behavioral health: follow Optum
For therapists, the behavioral health route matters. The Kansas UnitedHealthcare manual identifies Optum as the administrator for mental health and substance use benefits and directs credentialing questions to Provider Express. Do not assume a general medical network application finishes behavioral health participation. UnitedHealthcare Kansas provider manual
A practice checklist before scheduling in-network care
Ask each plan to confirm the clinician, billing entity, service location, covered network, and participation effective date in writing. Keep the KMAP approval, request confirmation, plan credentialing decision, and effective participation notice together. This checklist helps avoid treating a portal status as a contract. Sunflower provider FAQs
Confirm the KMAP record and locations are correct.
Confirm each chosen MCO received its request and required documents.
Confirm behavioral health contracting goes to the appropriate plan or administrator.
Confirm the effective date and billing setup before representing the provider as in-network.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a KMAP ID the same as MCO credentialing?
No. It is the state enrollment foundation. Each selected plan still needs to complete its applicable credentialing and contracting process.
Is Aetna Better Health a current KanCare plan?
No. Aetna’s official Kansas notice says it stopped serving KanCare members on January 1, 2025. KDHE currently lists Healthy Blue, Sunflower, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan.
