TherapyNotes vs Bomi: EHR, AI, and Billing Costs
By Bomi Team • October 14, 2026
If you are looking for a TherapyNotes alternative, identify what you want to change: clinical software, documentation costs, staff access, or the work of getting paid. TherapyNotes and Bomi should be compared on those separate questions.
Disclosure: Bomi publishes this comparison. We link vendor sources and show the required Bomi billing fee. We do not claim either product is best for every therapist or that a subscription table proves note quality.

How we compare costs at 20 sessions a week
Our scenario is one clinician, individual telehealth, secure client messaging, and one scheduler or biller user. We model 20 completed sessions weekly: 20 × 52 ÷ 12 = 86.67 monthly on average, rounded to 87 for transaction examples. Time off, cancellations, and your actual usage can change the bill.
Prices were checked October 14, 2026. We use standard US monthly rates after promotions, with optional AI for one note per session. Annual license fees are listed separately. These are selected configurations, not a complete feature-equivalence audit or the cheapest possible plan for every clinician.
EHR / selected plan | Software monthly, before AI | With AI on 87 sessions | Annual license fee |
|---|---|---|---|
TherapyNotes — Group, first clinician | $79.00 | $119.00 | $0.00 |
Bomi — EHR + required Bomi Billing | $29.00 + required 4% billing | $116.00 + required 4% billing | $0.00 |
Software totals exclude claim and eligibility transactions, card processing, taxes, paid reminders, other third-party charges, and human billing services. Jane’s optional insurance tools are also excluded. Bomi’s required billing fee is additional in every Bomi total; it cannot be omitted from a complete purchasing estimate.
TherapyNotes: Group is selected because the scenario includes a staff user. Basic telehealth is modeled; premium telehealth and insurance transactions are excluded.
Bomi: The $29 subscription is not available without required billing at 4% of net collections. The first-three-month EHR waiver is excluded; third-party charges remain separate.
What to know about TherapyNotes
TherapyNotes makes an important distinction between a sole-user account and an account with administrative staff. A practice with one clinician and a biller should compare the Group subscription rather than assume the Solo price applies.
The Solo subscription is $69 monthly for a sole user. The modeled Group subscription starts at $79 and includes nonclinical users. Basic telehealth is included; premium telehealth and other optional services have their own prices.
TherapyFuel is an optional clinician subscription. Its published overview says it is not currently available for group therapy sessions; verify your session types rather than treating every AI offering as equivalent.

What to know about Bomi
Bomi is a different purchasing decision: its native EHR comes with managed billing. It is designed for practices that want to evaluate the clinical software and the people responsible for insurance follow-up together.
The ongoing EHR subscription is $29 per clinician per month. Bomi Billing is required at 4% of net collections. Individual telehealth, secure messaging, and scheduler or biller access are included. Optional AI notes from recorded telehealth sessions cost $1 per session.
Bomi AI notes are pay-as-you-go for recorded telehealth sessions. They are not a flat unlimited subscription and should not be presented as less expensive for every caseload.

What happens when you use AI for every session?
For 87 monthly sessions, the selected TherapyNotes software and AI configuration totals $119.00, while Bomi totals $116 plus required billing. These amounts exclude the annual fees and third-party charges listed above. A practice using AI for only some visits should calculate a second estimate with its expected note count.
Compare billing responsibility, not just billing features
A claim-submission tool, an automated warning, and a human resolving a denial are different services. Ask who checks benefits, monitors unpaid claims, contacts payers, reconciles payments, and handles credentialing maintenance. Request a clear division of responsibilities and a way to inspect unresolved work.
Bomi is not VC-backed, and our billing team is in-house. We encourage the same questions about staffing and accountability for any billing provider. We do not infer outsourcing from another company’s size, funding, or software pricing.
At an illustrative $10,000 in monthly net collections, Bomi Billing costs $400. With the $29 EHR and AI for 87 sessions, the subtotal is $516 before applicable third-party fees. Compare that with your current software, AI, biller, and credentialing costs. If you bill yourself, distinguish cash expenses from any value you assign to your own administrative time.
Who is each option for?
TherapyNotes: You want to compare sole-user and staffed mental-health workflows, with a clear distinction between clinical and nonclinical users.
Bomi: You want managed billing together with your EHR and are comfortable with a collections-based service fee.
During a trial, have the clinician and biller complete their separate parts of the same appointment workflow. Check whether a rejected claim is easy to identify, assign, investigate, and revisit after a response.
Ask Bomi to demonstrate both the clinical workflow and the billing handoff. Review how the practice sees claims, balances, and credentialing status, and ask what still requires clinician action.
Switching from TherapyNotes to Bomi
When leaving TherapyNotes, inventory signed documentation and active treatment plans alongside outstanding claims. Decide which system will retain the historical billing ledger and who will work old dates of service after the cutover.
Before canceling, ask the destination for an import checklist and a sample reconciliation. Verify client count, signed notes, attachments, active treatment plans, future appointments, payer details, and open balances. Keep a written cutover date and an owner for old claims. Do not assume payer enrollments, payment credentials, or every document format move automatically.
Run a complete workflow with a synthetic client: intake, scheduling, documentation, billing, payment review, and export. Record missing fields and manual steps. A successful demo is more useful than a long feature checklist, especially when you depend on custom forms or staff permissions.
Do you need to change EHRs to change billing support?
Bomi also supports billing for practices staying on TherapyNotes. Ask for estimates for staying and switching; if your clinical workflow works well, changing billing support may address the problem without a migration.

Bomi costs $116 for its EHR and all-session AI, plus required billing at 4% of net collections and applicable third-party fees. Compare the entire service you intend to purchase.
