Add Your LLC to CMS I&A as Its Authorized Official

By George Ruan • October 21, 2026

Last checked: October 21, 2026.

You can have access to your individual NPI without access to your LLC. CMS gives a sole owner a separate organization relationship. Use this walkthrough when your business already has a Type 2 NPI and you need to establish yourself as its Authorized Official (AO).

Sections

Before you start

Have your personal I&A login, the business NPI, and its IRS EIN letter ready. The AO must have authority to legally bind the business. Your biller should not claim this role simply to gain access. CMS account responsibilities

  1. Sign in to CMS I&A with your existing personal account.

  2. Open My Profile. Under Employer Information, choose Add an Employer.

  3. Search using the LLC’s Type 2 NPI. Select the matching business; check its name before continuing.

  4. Choose Authorized Official and complete the personal authority attestation.

  5. Review the confirmation page, follow its verification instructions, and select Done. Keep the request tracking ID.

Upload EIN proof if CMS requires verification

The confirmation/review page supports document upload. Supply the organization’s CP575 or a CMS-approved alternative and include the I&A tracking ID. CMS sends an email when processing is complete; track status under My Profile → Employer Information. A pending request is not approved access. CMS verification instructions, pages 37–38

The EIN document establishes the business name and tax ID for access verification. An IRS 147C or another official IRS document may be an acceptable substitute; follow CMS’s actual request. Reuse an existing valid document when available. CMS explanation of EIN evidence

Once approved, invite your biller

Follow our biller invitation guide and select the LLC as the employer. Individual and organization access must be checked separately.

If the business cannot be found

First verify the Type 2 NPI in the NPPES NPI Registry. If it exists but I&A cannot find it, use CMS External User Services for access assistance before creating a duplicate record.

Linking an organization does not enroll it in Medicare or resolve an enrollment deadline. See CMS Medicare enrollment guidance for the separate application process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a second personal CMS account for my LLC?

No. CMS’s sole-owner instructions link the organization’s Type 2 NPI to your existing personal I&A account.

Can I invite my biller while my owner request is pending?

A pending owner request does not establish approved authority to grant organization access. Check the approval status first.

Does this approve my Medicare enrollment?

No. I&A access and Medicare enrollment are separate processes.
