Start with license readiness
Your license type determines whether you can practice independently, need supervision, or should set up inside a group practice first. Confirm the current rules with the state board before accepting clients.
This table is a setup readiness starting point, not a substitute for current board review.
Resolve clinical authority before business and payer setup
For a solo practice, confirm independent authority for the actual services. For a group, review every clinician’s credential, ownership or employment arrangement, supervision and payer role. A license, LLC, NPI or supervisor agreement answers only part of that analysis. Check issued credentials and restrictions; an application, completed hours or temporary status does not establish permanent practice authority.
Build provisional arrangements around the Board’s restrictions
PLPCs and PLMFTs have specific ownership and direct-client-payment restrictions. A payer’s willingness to recognize a supervised rendering clinician does not remove them. Confirm the permitted practice setting, administrative oversight, clinical supervision and employer billing arrangement before scheduling or submitting claims.
Separate social-work employment from licensure-credit supervision
LMSW and CSW clinical practice requires LCSW supervision in an authorized agency arrangement. A privately owned LLC and a supervision contract do not automatically satisfy agency-employment rules. Supervision credited toward LCSW licensure additionally requires a Board-Approved Clinical Supervisor and the Board’s documentation. The CSW extension permitted for qualifying community psychiatric support and treatment, or CPST, is not an unrestricted extension of psychotherapy authority.
Check the scope of the actual profession
LPC and LMFT authority remains subject to training, competence and referral requirements; their licenses do not authorize medication prescribing or the restricted practice of psychology. LPA restrictions separately exclude specified psychological testing and diagnoses of severe mental illness and other Board-defined disorders. Addiction and school-psychology credentials also have distinct service or setting limits.

| LMSW — Licensed Master Social Worker | No independent clinical practice. Agency-based psychotherapy requires LCSW supervision. | Clinical-service supervision and supervision credited toward LCSW licensure have different requirements. | Agency employment is required, with a narrow statutory government-agency contracting exception. | Check employment, supervision and supervised Medicaid rendering eligibility. | LMSW practice, R.S. 37:2707 |
| RSW — Registered Social Worker | No independent psychotherapy authority. Generalist practice excludes advanced and clinical social work. | Supervision does not turn this registration into a clinical license. | Must practice as an agency employee. | Accurate staff classifications and appropriately scoped services. | RSW practice, R.S. 37:2706 |
| CSW — Certified Social Worker | No independent practice. This is temporary master’s-level certification. | Clinical services and psychotherapy require LCSW supervision. | Agency employment applies. | PLP — Provisional Licensed Psychologist | No independent private practice. | Practice requires an authorized psychologist or medical psychologist’s clinical supervision and responsibility. | Board rules restrict direct client contracts and independent-practice representations. | Confirm the supervising or employing billing arrangement. | Provisional psychology, R.S. 37:2356.2 |
| LPA — Licensed Psychological Associate | Yes, once licensed, within restricted counseling and psychotherapy scope; specified testing and diagnoses are excluded. | An issued license differs from candidate status. | Provisional Psychological Associate candidate | No. Candidate status does not confer licensure or independent practice authority. | A preapproved supervised practice plan is required. | Identify candidate status and the supervisory relationship accurately. | Confirm the actual supervised service and payer arrangement. | Psychological associate candidates, LAC 46:LXIII §6503 |
| LSSP — Licensed Specialist in School Psychology | Limited to independent school contracting; outside-school practice requires clinical supervision. | Outside a school system, an authorized psychologist or medical psychologist is responsible for professional activities. | This is not unrestricted independent outpatient psychotherapy authority. | Verify the setting, service and payer recognition. | School psychology scope, R.S. 37:2356.3 |
| LAC — Licensed Addiction Counselor | Yes, for addictive-disorder counseling within this credential’s scope. | Independent addiction counseling does not establish general psychotherapy authority. | Check any separate addiction-program or facility licensing requirements. | Service-specific credentialing and insurance billing support. | LAC scope, R.S. 37:3387 |
| CAC, RAC and CIT — supervised addiction credentials | Not an ordinary independent private-practice pathway. The CAC custodial-setting exception is limited. | Follow each credential’s supervision and activity limits; CACs and RACs cannot render diagnostic impressions. | A business filing does not convert a supervised credential into an independent license. | Verify the permitted service, program and billing provider. | Addiction credential scopes, R.S. 37:3387.1–3387.3 |
