Start with license readiness

Your license type determines whether you can practice independently, need supervision, or should set up inside a group practice first. Confirm the current rules with the state board before accepting clients.

This table is a setup readiness starting point, not a substitute for current board review.

Temporary and courtesy authority has its own limits

Read the issued authorization before advertising or accepting clients. Psychology's temporary supervised licenses and courtesy license serve different purposes; the courtesy license does not authorize a general psychology practice. A pending application or another state's license is not itself Alaska practice authority.

PSYPACT requires individual authorization

The Alaska Board identifies September 20, 2026 as the state's PSYPACT participation date. Eligible psychologists still need the applicable compact authorization and must satisfy its location and practice requirements. State participation alone does not grant every psychologist or psychological associate permission to practice across state lines.

Social-work compact authority is not yet available

As of this review, Alaska's Social Work Licensure Compact law is scheduled to take effect January 1, 2027, and the Board says the compact is not yet operational. Do not treat passage of the law as current multistate practice authority; check implementation and individual eligibility before relying on it.

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)The full counseling license supports practice within your education, training and licensed scope. Confirm active status before opening.Approved counselor supervisor certification is separate from holding an LPC license.Provide the required professional disclosure statement before charging for counseling services; a business name does not replace accurate individual credentials.Prepare payer records around the issued license and intended solo or group arrangement.Alaska counseling statutes and regulations
Associate Counselor / postgraduate counseling superviseeA supervised route toward LPC licensure, not independent LPC authority. Associate-counselor regulations took effect August 21, 2026.For supervision accrued after March 31, 2027, the Board requires an active associate counselor license and an actively certified approved supervisor for hours to count. Earlier qualifying hours may count without the associate license.12 AAC 62.145(c) requires an active associate license before a new applicant begins Alaska supervised experience. Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)The clinical social-work license is the ordinary independent therapy path. Check active status and any restrictions. For licensing periods beginning after June 30, 2026, clinical supervisors must meet the experience, unrestricted-license and supervision-education requirements in 12 AAC 18.113.Keep the clinician's license distinct from the practice's entity and business-license records.Align individual, group and service-location enrollment with the actual practice.Alaska social-work statutes and regulations
LMSW / LBSW / postgraduate social-work internMaster and baccalaureate licenses are not independent clinical social-work licenses. Qualifying postgraduate clinical work follows the supervised intern pathway.Confirm the approved program, eligible supervisor, documentation and current rules before accruing clinical experience. Licensed PsychologistUse an active psychologist license for ordinary independent psychology practice, within your competence and any restrictions.A temporary license to practice under supervision is a different authorization from the completed psychologist license.Alaska requires psychologists to practice under their own names. Review group branding alongside the individual naming requirement.Match the licensed clinician, billing entity and locations in enrollment records.Alaska psychology statutes and regulations
Licensed Psychological AssociateA distinct completed license authorizing psychological services within the licensee's training and experience. Do not classify it as a trainee credential merely because it says associate.Distinguish full licensure from a temporary license to practice as a psychological associate under supervision; verify the issued scope and conditions.Psychological associates must use their own names for counseling or psychometry and accurately identify their credentials.Confirm each payer's recognized provider type; scope authority alone does not establish reimbursement.Psychological associate scope and naming rules
Next step: confirm your state board rulesUse the official Alaska licensing source before you decide whether to setup independently, stay supervised, or join a group first.

National steps

These steps are not unique to Alaska, but they still need to match the state, address, entity, tax, payer, and EHR details you use for setup.

  • Decide Type 1 NPI versus Type 2 NPI and whether the practice will bill under an individual or organization.
  • Create or update CAQH and keep attestations current.
  • Align EIN, W-9, business bank account, and payer-facing business identity.
  • Confirm HIPAA privacy/security, Notice of Privacy Practices, consent forms, Good Faith Estimate workflows, and documentation setup.
  • Select EHR, clearinghouse, billing workflow, payment processor, ERA/EFT workflow, and denial-management process.
  • Build a credentialing packet with license, malpractice, NPI, CAQH, W-9, bank documentation, taxonomy, service address, telehealth policies, and supervisor information if applicable.
  • Track payer applications, effective dates, portals, claim test dates, ERA/EFT status, and recredentialing deadlines.
Next step: clean up NPI and CAQHMake sure your individual NPI, organizational NPI decision, taxonomy, CAQH profile, W-9, and practice address are consistent before payer applications start.

State-specific steps

Business entity options

Choose the clinical and ownership model before filing. Alaska's Corporations Section handles entities such as LLCs and corporations; professional licensure and the Alaska business license are separate requirements. Complete applicable entity and professional licensing steps before the business-license application. A sole proprietor still needs to evaluate business licensing. If using a professional corporation, Alaska limits it to one type of professional service and requires appropriately licensed corporate participants; review mixed-profession ownership with counsel rather than assuming a generic entity filing is sufficient. A separate business license is required for each name used to operate and advertise, and the business must use that exact name. Name availability does not establish exclusive rights or professional advertising compliance. Align the legal owner, public name, EIN, W-9, NPI, CAQH, banking and payer records; check local office or home-office requirements with the municipality.

Next step: align entity details with billing recordsBefore payer setup, make sure your entity name, EIN, W-9, NPI, CAQH, EHR, and bank details will all tell the same story.

State and tax registration

Form a chosen legal entity before requesting its EIN, and establish federal tax and bookkeeping workflows appropriate to the structure. Alaska currently has no individual income tax or state individual-income-tax withholding, but corporate income tax and filing obligations depend on the entity's tax treatment. There is no statewide sales tax; cities and boroughs may impose their own sales or use taxes and exemptions, so confirm how local rules treat your services. A group hiring employees should review Alaska unemployment-insurance registration and contributions, workers' compensation and federal payroll obligations. Confirm the applicable accounts and returns with a tax adviser rather than treating the absence of personal income tax as an exemption from business obligations.

Next step: prepare EIN, banking, and payer paperworkUse the setup checklist to track financial setup before credentialing asks for tax and payment details.

Telehealth notes

Confirm the client's physical location at each visit and your authority in that jurisdiction, including requirements where you are located. Alaska generally bases licensing on where the patient receives care. Narrow statutory exceptions and compact authorizations require their own eligibility check. The MFT FAQ says no Alaska license is needed for an existing client temporarily visiting or vacationing in Alaska, while statewide guidance generally says one is required except for specified exceptions. Obtain Board confirmation before relying on that conflicting FAQ language. Separately, businesses delivering telehealth to Alaska patients must register on the Telemedicine Business Registry through Alaska business licensing and maintain the registration; an employee is covered through the employer's registration, while each operating business name needs the appropriate registration. Registration does not confer clinical authority. Apply your own board's consent, privacy, suitability and emergency-planning rules. Counselors need six hours of qualifying distance-services education and informed consent under 12 AAC 62.400–.420. MFT licensees need at least four hours of initial teletherapy training and written consent under 12 AAC 19.405–.420. Psychology licensees need at least four hours of telepsychology competency training and informed consent under 12 AAC 60.405–.415. Build identity/location checks, local emergency contacts and a backup plan into intake. Verify the payer's covered modalities, authorization and claim rules separately.

Next step: configure EHR and telehealth workflowsSet the client-facing workflow for scheduling, consent, documentation, payments, and billing before the first appointment.

Mandated reporting notes

Set up separate child-protection and vulnerable-adult reporting procedures. Alaska's mandatory child reporters include mental health professionals and social workers. Report suspected child abuse or neglect immediately to the Office of Children's Services (OCS); if OCS cannot be reached, follow its instructions for reporting to law enforcement. Suspected child sexual abuse must be reported to both OCS and law enforcement. Telling a supervisor does not discharge the reporting duty. Practices working with Tribal organizations or communities should also check applicable federal and Tribal reporting protocols. Adult Protective Services identifies mental health professionals, licensed health care providers and social workers as mandated reporters of qualifying harm to vulnerable adults. Required reports are due within 24 hours and include concerns about abuse, abandonment, neglect, self-neglect or exploitation. Use the current OCS and APS reporting channels linked below, document the action, and contact emergency services first when someone faces immediate danger.

Next step: build forms and policy review into setupKeep clinical policies, privacy workflows, intake forms, and billing policies on the same setup checklist.

Insurance credentialing notes

Start Alaska Medicaid enrollment through the state's current provider resources and HMS Gainwell, which the Department of Health identifies as its enrollment and fiscal-agent partner. Confirm the individual or organization provider type, rendering/billing relationships, service locations and active dates before billing. The behavioral-health resource page lists separate independent-practitioner schedules for LPCs, LCSWs, LMFTs and psychologists, alongside community behavioral-health and 1115-waiver programs. A rate listing does not establish a particular clinician's enrollment or coverage; organizational and waiver services can have additional department approval, service and staffing requirements. AMCCI offers case management to members and is not a substitute for provider enrollment or covered-service review. For commercial insurance, Premera's Alaska network process separates credentialing, contracting and additions to an existing group. New providers must complete credentialing; a new agreement is not complete until finalized and countersigned, with its effective date confirmed. Check every intended product and clinician, telehealth coverage, benefits, authorizations, EFT/ERA and claim submission rules. Neither an NPI nor a supervisor's or group's participation automatically establishes payment for another clinician's services.

Next step: Map your payer listChoose target payers, gather packet details, and track every application through effective date and claim readiness.
