Start with license readiness
Your license type determines whether you can practice independently, need supervision, or should set up inside a group practice first. Confirm the current rules with the state board before accepting clients.
This table is a setup readiness starting point, not a substitute for current board review.
Confirm the Alabama credential before choosing the practice model
For a solo launch, first resolve independent clinical authority and any PIP requirement. For a group, check every clinician's license, supervision and payer status separately. A hybrid office and telehealth model adds location and modality questions to both paths. Board authorization and payer enrollment are separate decisions.
Do not treat older social-work diagnosis restrictions as current
The Alabama social-work Board states that all LICSWs may diagnose effective September 14, 2023. That clarification does not settle the separate PIP question for your proposed private social-casework services.
| Credential | Independent practice? | Supervision issue? | Entity/business note | Bomi relevance | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) | The full counseling license supports private practice within Alabama and the counselor's training and scope. Confirm active, unrestricted status. | LPC supervisor approval is a separate qualification; an LPC license alone does not make you an approved ALC supervisor. | Resolve ownership and professional naming before aligning entity, tax, NPI and payer records. | Prepare the credentialing packet after confirming the license and practice model. | Alabama counseling scope, Rule 255-X-2-.01 |
| Associate Licensed Counselor (ALC) | A supervised counseling credential, not independent clinical authority. | Clinical services require an ABEC-approved supervising LPC and Proposed Plan of Supervision. Maintain supervision while an LPC application is pending; confirm approval before adding practice sites. | Owning a business or obtaining an NPI does not remove the supervision requirement. | Confirm each payer's associate, rendering-provider and supervisor rules before billing. | ABEC supervision FAQ |
| Provisional counselor / out-of-state applicant | Do not assume an application or another state's license permits an Alabama practice. A provisional license has Board-specific conditions. | ABEC describes provisional licensure for applicants addressing deficiencies; confirm the issued level, supervision, expiration and written stipulations. | Resolve clinical authority before advertising an independent practice or accepting clients. | Keep provisional status and limitations explicit in payer applications. | ABEC endorsement and provisional licensure FAQ |
| Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) / PIP | LICSW is the independent clinical license. Alabama also retains Private Independent Practice (PIP) certification for private social casework; confirm whether your proposed services require it. | The Board's classification rule distinguishes LICSW private practice from social casework requiring PIP. Resolve that distinction with the Board before opening. | An LLC or contractor arrangement does not replace a required PIP certification. | Record both the clinical license and any required PIP certification in enrollment materials. | Alabama social-work classifications, Rule 850-X-2-.02 |
| Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) / Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW) | Neither is interchangeable with LICSW for independent clinical therapy. Clinical social work by an LMSW requires clinical supervision; LBSW is a generalist credential. | Match the clinical or nonclinical designation, job duties, supervisor and approved arrangement to current Board rules. | Do not use an independent-clinician business or payer template for a supervised role. | Verify the permitted service, enrollment category and supervision requirements with each payer. | Alabama clinical social-work definition, Rule 850-X-2-.01 |
| Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) | The Board's full MFT license is distinct from associate and intern designations. Confirm current status and competent scope before an independent launch. | Supervising interns or associates requires the appropriate Board-recognized supervisor status. | Check ownership, naming and service-location details for a solo or multidisciplinary group. | Align individual and group enrollment with the actual services and locations. | Alabama MFT designations, Rule 536-X-3-.01 |
| MFT Associate / MFT Intern | Supervised training paths, not full independent LMFT licensure. | Associates practice under a Board-approved supervisory arrangement; interns practice within an approved training or supervision setting. Keep the credential, supervisor and training status clear. | A business filing does not convert a supervised designation into independent authority. | Check whether the specific payer recognizes the credential and arrangement before planning reimbursement. | Alabama MFT designations, Rule 536-X-3-.01 |
| Licensed Psychologist | Use an active Alabama psychologist license for an ordinary independent psychology practice, within your competence and any license restrictions. | Doctoral training or an application alone is not licensure. Temporary out-of-state practice and compact authority need separate eligibility review. | Identify each licensed clinician separately in public descriptions and payer records. | Prepare the individual, group and location records for the intended payer products. | Alabama psychology licensure FAQs |
| Licensed Psychological Technician | A distinct master's-level credential with service-specific limits, not a full psychologist license. | The Board requires qualified psychologist supervision for clinical intervention, personality appraisal, consultation and assistance with forensic or neuropsychological evaluations. Some other services may be unsupervised with adequate training. | Describe the exact credential and supervised services accurately. | Resolve service and payer eligibility before building the billing workflow. | Alabama psychology licensure FAQs |
