A named resident pathway with a clear rendering identity
Sentara’s commercial manual gives a practical answer for a Virginia practice considering a Resident in Counseling or a Supervisee in Social Work. It describes their work under a clinical supervisor and explicitly directs billing with the supervising provider’s individual NPI as renderer. The practice can plan around this documented pathway, provided the candidate has the required status and the supervisor is credentialed for the populations the resident will treat.
The scope of that answer matters. The section does not name every provisional discipline, does not turn a degree holder into a board-approved resident, and does not establish ordinary student-placement eligibility. It also does not automatically supply the rule for a Sentara Medicaid or Medicare member. Start with the candidate’s actual board status and the commercial agreement, then confirm the intended clinical assignments and practice loading.

Associates, students and graduates have different answers
Sentara’s commercial manual expressly permits Residents in Counseling and Supervisees in Social Work under their clinical supervisor, with services limited to populations for which that supervisor is credentialed.
The resident/supervisee section does not establish a general student internship pathway. Its mention of educational-facility oversight does not make every pre-degree student an eligible resident.
A graduate may qualify after obtaining the board-approved residency/supervisee arrangement described by the manual. An unregistered graduate is not established as eligible.

Before assigning insured clients
Verify board-approved status, supervisory contract and supervisor credentials for the intended populations.
Arrange supervision responsibility, required participation, documentation and note review under licensing/educational oversight requirements.
Confirm group loading and product panels without assuming the generic add-provider form requires independent credentialing for every resident.
Use the supervisor’s individual NPI as renderer; resolve additional filing/telehealth requirements for psychotherapy separately.

Offsite supervision is not a complete telehealth rule
The resident provision contemplates the supervisor being onsite or offsite while retaining responsibility. This does not settle the patient visit’s telehealth coding. Sentara’s separate 2026 audio-only update removes modifier 93 for a specified set of 98008–98015 services; it should not be rewritten as a universal psychotherapy modifier change. Keep the resident eligibility decision and the modality-specific claim instructions separate.
