Use the Aetna standard only under the applicable Innovation agreement

Innovation Health’s provider resources connect its provider manual to Aetna provider contracts. Aetna’s supervisory bulletin provides an affirmative route for qualified license-eligible behavioral-health clinicians, but the practice still needs to establish that the member and its Innovation agreement use that standard. This is a concrete conditional hiring option, not a general assumption that any Aetna-related brand or payer identifier carries the same permission.

The bulletin’s useful distinction is educational completion. The candidate must have completed the education for the intended license, be accruing independent-license hours and receive regular qualified supervision. A student still completing the qualifying education is different from an education-complete graduate. State credential requirements continue to matter, but the bulletin should not be rewritten as requiring an unspecified provisional license in every state.

Associates, students and graduates have different answers

If the Innovation Health member agreement adopts the applicable Aetna commercial supervisory standard, qualified license-eligible clinicians may bill through an eligible in-network supervisor. Innovation’s provider page links its manual to Aetna contracts; exact member agreement adoption still needs confirmation.

The Aetna standard requires completion of all education for the target license; a student still completing that education does not fit this pathway.

Under the adopted Aetna standard, graduates with completed education who are accruing independent-license hours and receiving regular qualified supervision can qualify; a provisional license is not universally prescribed by the bulletin, but state requirements still apply.

Before assigning insured clients

Confirm actual Innovation contract adoption, member benefits and in-network arrangement.

Use a supervisor employed by the same group/facility, independently licensed and actively credentialed/contracted; arrange supervision proportionate to caseload.

Verify contract execution/system loading for contracted-rate claims; the Virginia general credentialing paragraph is not itself a trainee exception.

List the licensed supervisor as rendering clinician under the adopted standard; resolve additional required fields and telehealth separately.

Employment and supervision must fit the arrangement

The supervisor must be employed by the same group or facility, independently licensed and actively credentialed and contracted under the applicable network arrangement. The bulletin allows different service locations and virtual supervision. This flexibility does not remove the regular supervision requirement or independently authorize a particular telehealth claim configuration. Confirm the member’s covered services and the practice’s contract before assigning clients.

Claim identity and product limits

Aetna bulletin identifies supervisor as rendering clinician; dedicated DQ, 2310D and modifier rules are not established. Virtual supervision is allowed but does not itself establish patient telehealth filing.

Conditional Innovation Health commercial agreement adopting Aetna standard; not automatic from payer 40025 and not Aetna EAP.
