Use the current associate enrollment route
A MedCost practice hiring an associate has more to work with than a generic request to ask the insurer. The current Add a Provider to a Participating Practice form lists LCMHC-A, LCSW-A and LMFT-A among its categories. These explicit choices support investigating network enrollment for the actual associate license.
The form requests practice EIN and group NPI, the new provider’s individual NPI and CAQH information. Prepare the candidate’s own information rather than assuming every session will appear only under an established supervisor. These are enrollment inputs; they do not determine the final claim identity.

Plan around approval and the member’s actual benefits
MedCost says providers must be credentialed and approved before they are added to its network. Its credentialing instructions explain how to supply a CAQH ID and authorize MedCost to access the application. A submitted add-provider form is not an approval or an effective participation date.
Separately identify the client’s employer plan and confirm coverage for the candidate’s service and credential. MedCost network participation and a MedCost Benefit Services employer-plan benefit are different questions. Before assigning insured visits, obtain a determination for the actual associate, practice arrangement and treatment state.

Keep licensed associates separate from students and graduates
The form’s associate categories are not a general student-intern pathway. A graduate who lacks the required associate license is also a different candidate. Neither the current form nor the reviewed manual establishes a degree-only or college-placement reimbursement exception.
If your hire is a student or unlicensed graduate, do not select an associate category merely because a supervisor is available. The unresolved question is whether the governing plan has an express pathway for that person’s actual status.

Do not turn an old LPA clause into today’s claim rule
A March 2022 manual described a narrow MA LPA arrangement involving an overseeing participating MD. The currently linked October 2025 manual does not reproduce that provision. Its absence proves neither that the old pathway survives nor that all supervised services are now prohibited. Obtain current clarification if that historical category matters to your hire.
The October 2025 manual gives general rendering-loop instructions, including 2310B when rendering differs from billing. That syntax does not choose the associate’s or supervisor’s NPI for an approved service. It also contains routing references needing card-specific reconciliation. Resolve the actual payment identity, modifiers and telehealth implementation after establishing the candidate’s covered arrangement.
For example, a practice adding an actual LCSW-A can use the form’s named category and prepare that clinician’s individual identifiers. A social-work student cannot be assumed to fit the same category. In either case, determine the applicable eligibility and approval outcome before treating the form as evidence of payable visits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the associate option on the form guarantee payment?
It establishes that the form accepts the named category for enrollment review. Credentialing approval, member-plan coverage and correct claim preparation remain separate.
Should I automatically bill my associate’s visits under the supervisor?
No such general substitution rule was established. The current enrollment form requests the candidate’s individual NPI, and generic rendering-loop syntax does not decide a supervisory arrangement.
Can my student use the LCSW-A option?
Only an actual holder of the relevant credential should be described that way. The listed associate category does not establish student intern coverage.
