CareSource Indiana: Can Associates or Interns Bill?

By Bomi Health • August 23, 2026

Policy research reviewed October 17, 2026. This hiring guide separates a documented pathway from the conditions still to confirm for your clinician and member benefit.

The answer depends on the service program

Do not decide a supervised clinician’s billability from the CareSource name alone. Indiana has documented qualified completed-degree and CMHC-student rules, but the ordinary behavioral-health module is FFS guidance. It does not by itself establish that a particular CareSource outpatient contract accepts your associate or graduate.

CCBHC services have a more concrete payer-specific answer. CareSource expressly directs these claims to Gainwell, with authorization handled by Acentra, effective January 1, 2025. A clinician serving a CareSource member through the approved CCBHC program therefore needs that program’s participation and encounter setup rather than the ordinary CareSource submission route.

Associate, graduate and student are separate categories

The state outpatient framework recognizes qualified completed-degree practitioners who cannot enroll individually, as well as eligible enrolled professionals. A graduate degree must meet the actual listed discipline and education requirements. Student interns have a distinct CMHC placement provision with school approval and a hospital-affiliation restriction; that FFS provision is not a blanket CareSource private-group student exception.

The current CCBHC bulletin separately addresses supervised interns and practitioners obtaining clinical hours. Its HL/HE exception supports that program’s supervised service handling without establishing every ordinary CareSource trainee contract.

Set up the CCBHC encounter correctly

For the designated CCBHC route, verify specialty 623 enrollment and the correct CCBHC NPI. CareSource’s notice describes one T1040 unit, a valid trigger service and the same-day service details. Q2 belongs on applicable encounter detail; DCO detail uses V2 instead. Q2 is not required on T1040 itself.

The later state clarification omits HL/HE for the specified supervised CCBHC services from February 1, 2026 and requires the actual supervised provider to be documented. This program exception must be kept separate from ordinary outpatient modifier rules.

What to arrange before offering insured appointments

Establish whether the role belongs to an enrolled CCBHC, a qualifying CMHC or an ordinary outpatient group. Verify the degree or student placement, qualified supervisor, enrollment affiliations and program documentation. For ordinary CareSource outpatient work, obtain specific acceptance of the proposed clinician, roster, supervision and rendering identity.

CareSource’s generic 24J rendering and 33A billing locations do not create trainee eligibility or an extra mandatory supervisor loop. Its older reference-guide modifier list must be read alongside the later state AH/HE updates. Telehealth also requires the actual statutory practitioner category and CareSource payment terms; legal permission alone does not prove coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do CCBHC claims for a CareSource member go to CareSource?

CareSource’s notice directs designated CCBHC claims to Gainwell and authorization to Acentra. Ordinary outpatient CareSource claims are a separate route.

Which product and setting does this hiring answer cover?

Indiana IHCP outpatient FFS; independently enrolled clinical professionals, qualified nonenrollable completed-degree practitioners, CMHC student interns and CCBHC encounters are separate paths. Express FFS/MCE modifier bulletins do not make every ordinary FFS enrollment or intern rule a CareSource contract rule.
