Start with license readiness
Your license type determines whether you can practice independently, need supervision, or should set up inside a group practice first. Confirm the current rules with the state board before accepting clients.
This table is a setup readiness starting point, not a substitute for current board review.
Use the exact Washington credential
Full LMHC, LMFT, LICSW, and Licensed Psychologist credentials are the clearest independent clinical paths in this guide. LASW is a full license, but psychotherapy remains supervised; associates, psychological associates, probationary licenses, temporary permits, and compact privileges need separate scope and payer analysis.
LASW is full licensure, not independent clinical social work
Washington's advanced-social-work definition includes psychotherapy only under qualifying supervision. Do not collapse LASW into LICSW when describing clinical authority, building a directory profile, selecting taxonomy, enrolling with Apple Health, or applying to a commercial payer.
Associate practice remains supervised
LMHCA, LMFTA, Advanced Social Worker Associate, and Independent Clinical Social Worker Associate credentials are prelicensure paths. An entity, NPI, supervisor attestation, or submitted payer application does not turn associate services into independent practice.
Practice authority and payment authority are separate
A full license, temporary permit, probationary license, compact privilege, or approved supervised arrangement does not require Apple Health or a commercial product to enroll or reimburse the clinician. Verify provider type, network, group affiliation, effective date, claim fields, and the first clean claim separately.
| Credential | Independent practice? | Supervision issue? | Entity/business note | Bomi relevance | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LMHC — Licensed Mental Health Counselor | Generally yes once the full Washington LMHC license is active and services remain within scope. | The full path includes qualifying graduate education, postgraduate supervised experience, examination, and Department of Health approval. Keep LMHC separate from LMHCA and any compact or probationary authority. | Good fit for solo, group, or hybrid setup after aligning the license, legal identity, public name, trade name, NPI, CAQH, W-9, service locations, and payer records. | Strong fit for commercial credentialing, Apple Health enrollment when eligible, claims, denials, and revenue operations. | Washington mental health counselor licensing requirements |
| LMHCA — Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate | No. Washington defines an associate as a prelicensure candidate and does not allow an associate to provide mental health counseling independently for a fee. | Maintain an approved supervisor, approved setting, supervision records, active associate credential, and progress toward the full LMHC license. Confirm current renewal and supervised-experience rules. | Use a compliant supervised group, employment, or other approved setting. Ownership or a business filing does not remove supervision or create payer recognition. | Bomi can support a supervised workflow only after the Department of Health, supervisor, practice, Apple Health program, payer, and claim configuration are resolved. | Washington mental health counselor licensing requirements |
| LMFT — Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist | Generally yes once the full Washington LMFT license is active and services remain within scope. | The full path includes qualifying graduate education, postgraduate supervised experience, examination, and Department of Health approval. Keep LMFT separate from LMFTA. | Good fit for solo, group, or hybrid setup after aligning the license, entity, public name, NPI, CAQH, W-9, locations, and payer records. | Strong fit for commercial credentialing, Apple Health enrollment when eligible, claims, denials, and recredentialing. | Washington marriage and family therapist licensing requirements |
| LMFTA — Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate | No. The associate credential is a supervised prelicensure path, not an independent private-practice license. | Maintain an approved supervisor, approved setting, supervision records, active associate credential, and progress toward the full LMFT license. | Use a compliant supervised group, employment, or other approved setting and verify how the exact payer handles rendering, billing, and supervision. | Bomi can support the workflow only after the lawful practice model, supervisor, Apple Health program, payer, and claim configuration are confirmed. | Washington marriage and family therapist licensing requirements |
| LICSW — Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker | Generally yes once the full Washington LICSW license is active and clinical services remain within scope. | The full path includes qualifying social-work education, supervised postgraduate clinical experience, examination, and Department of Health approval. Keep LICSW separate from LASW and both social-worker associate credentials. | Good fit for solo, group, or hybrid clinical setup after aligning the license, business identity, NPI, CAQH, W-9, locations, and payer records. | Strong fit for commercial and Apple Health credentialing, claims, denials, and revenue operations. | Washington social worker licensing requirements |
| LASW — Licensed Advanced Social Worker | A full Washington license, but not the same as LICSW independent clinical practice. State law includes psychotherapy within advanced social work only under qualifying clinical supervision. | Confirm supervision for psychotherapy, the exact service and setting, and whether the practice goal requires the LICSW scope instead. Do not market or bill LASW as LICSW. | A business entity cannot expand the LASW scope. Align public descriptions, supervision, taxonomy, NPI, CAQH, Apple Health, and commercial-payer records with the actual credential. | Bomi can help after the clinical scope, supervision, provider type, and payer-specific billing model are confirmed. | Washington social-work scope definitions |
| Advanced Social Worker Associate or Independent Clinical Social Worker Associate | No. Both are prelicensure associate credentials and may not provide social work independently for a fee. | Use the associate credential that matches the intended full license, maintain an approved supervisor and setting, document supervision, and confirm the current experience and renewal rules. | Use a compliant supervised group, employment, or other approved model. Do not treat entity ownership, an NPI, or state credentialing as payer permission. | Bomi can track a supervised workflow only after Department of Health, supervisor, practice, Apple Health, payer, and claim requirements are clear. | Washington social worker licensing requirements |
| Licensed Psychologist | Generally yes once the full Washington psychologist license is active and services remain within scope. | The full path requires qualifying doctoral education, supervised experience, examinations, and Board approval. Keep the full license separate from a psychological associate, temporary practice permit, probationary license, and PSYPACT authority. | Good fit for solo, group, or hybrid setup after aligning license, legal identity, NPI, CAQH, W-9, service locations, telehealth authority, and payer records. | Strong fit for commercial and Apple Health enrollment, claims, denials, and revenue operations. | Washington psychologist licensing requirements |
| Psychological Associate | No ordinary independent-practice launch. Washington uses this credential for a doctoral student or postdoctoral participant practicing under an approved supervision agreement. | Maintain the supervision agreement, attestation of competence, qualifying enrollment or postdoctoral status, active credential, and exact service and setting requirements. | Use a compliant supervised training or postdoctoral model and confirm Apple Health and commercial-payer recognition before configuring claims. | Bomi can support the group workflow only after the Board, supervisor, practice, provider type, payer, and claim model are resolved. | Washington psychologist licensing requirements |
| Probationary, temporary, compact, or other limited authority | Do not treat limited-duration, cross-border, or compact authority as a permanent Washington license or an automatic payer contract. | Verify the exact credential or privilege, eligibility, effective and expiration dates, scope, supervision if any, client location, renewal or conversion path, and any restrictions before practice. | Keep temporary or interstate authority distinct from permanent licensure in public descriptions, NPI, CAQH, Apple Health, directories, contracts, and claims. | Bomi can track authority-to-practice and payer risk, but should not imply Apple Health enrollment, network participation, or commercial reimbursement. | Washington behavioral-health legislative implementation |
