Start with license readiness

Your license type determines whether you can practice independently, need supervision, or should set up inside a group practice first. Confirm the current rules with the state board before accepting clients.

This table is a setup readiness starting point, not a substitute for current board review.

Approve the supervised worksite before accepting clients

For a P-LPC, remote supervision alone should not be treated as approval for a home-only practice. Official counselor materials differ on the wording of on-site coverage and distance-service requirements. Confirm the current rule, supervisor, site affiliation and Declaration of Practice with the Board before using the arrangement.

LCSW means Licensed Certified Social Worker in Mississippi

Check actual clinical qualifications rather than translating an out-of-state title. Current rules do not establish an independent LSW or LMSW psychotherapy credential. Before counting supervised experience toward LCSW, obtain the required Board approval of the contract and plan; finishing experience does not itself upgrade the issued license.

DMH credentials belong to approved programs

The July 2026 DMH rules use Mental Health Therapist and Substance Use Therapist credential families, including provisional levels. Older addictions titles in payer documents should not be assumed to match the new terminology automatically. Legacy DMH clinical credentials also remain program-bound; confirm the actual credential and employment status.

A group contract does not establish each clinician’s authority

For every clinician, document the issued credential, scope, supervisor where required, authorized setting and payer status. Clinical supervision, ownership, organizational enrollment and reimbursement are separate decisions. Adding a clinician to a website or roster is not evidence that all of those requirements have been met.

Continue supervision until the full LPC is issued.A business filing does not remove supervision or worksite restrictions.Verify the provisional provider category with each payer.Provisional counseling and supervision rules
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)Yes, within MFT scope, competence and license conditions.Approval to supervise associates is separate from holding an LMFT license.Check the proposed owners and professional services before formation.Align individual credentialing, group affiliation and locations.MFT licensing rules, Part 1903
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LMFTA)No autonomous MFT practice.Practice is in an agency setting under a Board-approved supervision contract. An ordinary solo-practice filing does not create an authorized associate setting.Confirm how the payer recognizes the actual LMFTA credential.MFT associate practice and supervision
Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW)Independent practice within the practitioner’s demonstrated expertise. Verify clinical preparation for psychotherapy.Clinical and macro preparation are distinct; the abbreviation alone does not establish every clinical qualification.Clinical authority does not settle professional ownership or entity questions.Confirm clinical qualifications and the payer’s accepted category.Social-work scope and clinical qualifications, Part 1902
Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)No autonomous practice. Clinical services require qualifying agency or organizational employment and supervision.Clinical supervision must meet Board rules; experience toward LCSW requires an approved LCSW supervisor and plan.An outside supervisor and a contractor label do not establish authority for an independent practice.Verify program, employment and payer restrictions before enrollment.Board social-work scope guidance

Next step: confirm your state board rulesUse the official Mississippi licensing source before you decide whether to setup independently, stay supervised, or join a group first.

National steps

These steps are not unique to Mississippi, but they still need to match the state, address, entity, tax, payer, and EHR details you use for setup.

  • Decide Type 1 NPI versus Type 2 NPI and whether the practice will bill under an individual or organization.
  • Create or update CAQH and keep attestations current.
  • Align EIN, W-9, business bank account, and payer-facing business identity.
  • Confirm HIPAA privacy/security, Notice of Privacy Practices, consent forms, Good Faith Estimate workflows, and documentation setup.
  • Select EHR, clearinghouse, billing workflow, payment processor, ERA/EFT workflow, and denial-management process.
  • Build a credentialing packet with license, malpractice, NPI, CAQH, W-9, bank documentation, taxonomy, service address, telehealth policies, and supervisor information if applicable.
  • Track payer applications, effective dates, portals, claim test dates, ERA/EFT status, and recredentialing deadlines.
Next step: clean up NPI and CAQHMake sure your individual NPI, organizational NPI decision, taxonomy, CAQH profile, W-9, and practice address are consistent before payer applications start.

State-specific steps

Business entity options

Choose the structure around the proposed services and owners. A sole proprietorship, LLC, corporation or professional entity has different formation and tax consequences; complete the applicable Secretary of State formation or foreign-registration process. Before selecting an LLC, PLLC or professional corporation, have counsel and the relevant board review professional-entity eligibility, ownership, management, clinical control and naming requirements. Do not assume every therapist must form a PLLC or that an accepted ordinary LLC filing approves any clinical ownership arrangement. Mixed-profession groups and nonclinician investors need particular review. Some SOS professional-entity summaries are archival, so confirm current law rather than relying on an old filing guide. Public or fictitious-name registration is a separate question from creating the entity. Check the current SOS process and any banking or payer requirements for the chosen name; a name filing does not confer clinical authority or resolve trademark rights. Mississippi LLCs and for-profit corporations generally have annual reports due April 15. Calendar the requirements for the actual entity type, registered agent and current address. Check local zoning, occupancy, signage and business-permit requirements for the office, including a home office. If the business will operate a DMH program, investigate program certification separately. Keep the legal and public names, EIN, W-9, banking, NPIs, service locations and payer records consistent before submitting applications.

Next step: align entity details with billing recordsBefore payer setup, make sure your entity name, EIN, W-9, NPI, CAQH, EHR, and bank details will all tell the same story.

State and tax registration

Use Mississippi Department of Revenue guidance and Taxpayer Access Point (TAP) to register the accounts required by the practice’s activities and tax treatment. Review income or entity taxes, withholding, and any sales/use obligations with a Mississippi tax professional. Employers paying covered Mississippi wages must address withholding registration. Purchases from out-of-state sellers and sales of goods or separately taxable services can create obligations beyond the therapy fees themselves. Do not automatically apply Mississippi’s general sales-tax rate to every therapy charge or assume that every activity of a therapy business is exempt. Ask DOR or a qualified adviser about the actual revenue streams and entity structure. Before hiring, address Mississippi Department of Employment Security unemployment registration and other applicable employer requirements. Evaluate employee-versus-contractor classification based on the work arrangement; choosing a label does not resolve either employment obligations or a licensing board’s employment restrictions.

Next step: prepare EIN, banking, and payer paperworkUse the setup checklist to track financial setup before credentialing asks for tax and payment details.

Telehealth notes

Confirm the client’s and clinician’s physical locations and the authority required in each jurisdiction. Build consent, confidentiality, identity verification, local emergency contacts and a connection-failure plan into intake and each relevant encounter. Counselors must complete qualifying telemental-health training or hold the recognized credential and submit verification to the Board. P-LPC distance services also require approval from an LPC-S with the Board’s distance-services designation; confirm the worksite arrangement separately. MFT rules call for appropriate secure technology, competence, client suitability and written disclosure of risks and responsibilities. Social-work rules address both jurisdictions, disclosure of electronic-service risks and security safeguards. Telehealth does not expand an associate’s or LMSW’s underlying scope. As of October 23, 2026, the Counseling Compact operational list marks Mississippi “No,” and the Social Work Compact is not yet issuing multistate licenses. Mississippi participates in PSYPACT, but psychologists need the applicable individual authorization: E.Passport and APIT for telepsychology, or IPC and TAP for temporary in-person practice. Recheck the commission and board before relying on a compact. Medicaid adds separate payment requirements. Part 225 generally defines telehealth as live interactive audiovisual care and requires signed consent and clinical documentation. It includes the beneficiary’s home as an originating site, but Rule 1.4(D) restricts practitioner telehealth visits for non-established beneficiaries. Confirm its application to the proposed service and plan before building a fully virtual new-patient pathway. Ordinary telephone conversations are excluded from the general telehealth definition; verify any specific exception rather than assuming audio-only coverage. Check the eligible distant-site provider category, service, authorization, place of service and modifier. Part 206 recognition of provisional providers does not automatically establish eligibility under the separate telehealth rules.

Next step: configure EHR and telehealth workflowsSet the client-facing workflow for scheduling, consent, documentation, payments, and billing before the first appointment.

Mandated reporting notes

Maintain separate child and vulnerable-adult reporting workflows. MDCPS’s instructions reproduce the child-reporting duty under §43-21-353: a person with reasonable cause to suspect child abuse or neglect must make an immediate oral report, followed by a written report as soon as possible. Call Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services at 1-800-222-8000, available 24 hours a day. Do not treat this as a 24- or 48-hour grace period or delay for an internal investigation. For a vulnerable adult, known or suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation requires immediate reporting under the applicable law and MDHS instructions. Vulnerability concerns impaired ability to care for or protect oneself, not age alone. For private-home situations, contact MDHS Adult Protective Services at 844-437-6282. For licensed facilities and qualifying unlicensed personal-care homes, follow the separate reporting routes to the Mississippi State Department of Health or Attorney General identified on the MDHS page. The 48- and 72-hour periods discussed in adult-protection materials concern agency action, not permission for a clinician to wait. Call 911 for immediate danger. Record the concern, time, recipient and follow-up instructions without delaying the report; notifying a supervisor should not be assumed to satisfy the external reporting duty.

Next step: build forms and policy review into setupKeep clinical policies, privacy workflows, intake forms, and billing policies on the same setup checklist.

Insurance credentialing notes

Start by identifying the patient’s actual plan and the provider category for the service. Mississippi Medicaid uses MESA for enrollment. Confirm the required individual and group or organization records, affiliations, locations, disclosures and effective dates. State enrollment and credentialing do not create a managed-care contract. The current Medicaid site links Magnolia, Molina and TrueCare for its managed-care programs; verify the particular MississippiCAN or CHIP product and network. TrueCare’s provider guidance, for example, requires DOM credentialing before plan participation and distinguishes it from the contract and its effective date. Do not promise that a pending application will be approved or backdated. The final Part 206 mental-health rule effective August 1, 2026 includes P-LPC and provisional MFT participation within licensed scope. It does not turn those clinicians into independent practitioners. The MFT provision uses terminology that differs from the Board’s LMFTA title; obtain confirmation of the correct enrollment and rendering category. The psychologist provision specifies Ph.D., so a Psy.D. holder should confirm the applicable DOM classification. LMSW and DMH-credentialed staff appear in designated community/private mental-health-center provisions; do not extend that program permission automatically to an ordinary private group. Before billing supervised services, verify the allowed setting, supervision, covered service, enrollment, rendering-provider identification and claim instructions with DOM and the plan. There is no general assurance that an associate’s work can be billed under a supervisor’s NPI. On the review date, Medicaid’s regular website was affected by an outage. Current rule text and MESA remain available, but practice-specific enrollment instructions need confirmation with Provider Services at 1-800-884-3222. For commercial plans, credential verification, contracting and active participation are separate milestones. Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi uses CAQH as part of its application process and distinguishes an approved provider number from approved network participation. Confirm the clinician, organization, locations and product before describing the practice as in network. A completed CAQH profile or an existing employer’s contract does not establish participation for a new practice. For each payer, check eligibility, benefits, authorization, documentation, coding, timely filing, claim routing and ERA/EFT setup. Track the response and effective date in writing; verification alone does not guarantee payment.

Next step: Map your payer listChoose target payers, gather packet details, and track every application through effective date and claim readiness.
