Can LMHCAs, LMFTAs and Social Work Associates Bill Apple Health?

Does Apple Health cover licensed associate therapy?

Yes, conditionally. HCA added licensed mental-health, social-work and marriage-and-family-therapy associates to its Part I framework from July 1, 2024. Registration as a servicing provider under a facility or clinic, using the associate’s own NPI, became required January 1, 2025. This is not independent-practitioner enrollment or automatic participation in every managed-care network.

Which Washington credentials are named?

The October 1, 2026 billing guide identifies LMHCA, LMFTA, LSWAIC and LASWA, and separately addresses psychological associates. A licensed associate is not interchangeable with a generic unlicensed graduate or student. The named pathway does not establish student-intern reimbursement merely because a licensed supervisor is available.

Can someone practice while an associate application is pending?

The guide describes a limited 120-day practice provision after a completed DOH associate application: master’s-level behavioral-health associates from October 1, 2025 and psychological associates from January 1, 2026. Practice must stop at the deadline or denial unless the credential has issued. This practice provision is not an automatic payer enrollment approval.

Whose NPI is rendering under Part I?

HCA’s associate alert requires the actual associate’s own servicing NPI under the facility or clinic. Replacing it with a supervisor’s NPI is not the stated rule. The October guide still separately requires independent licensure and a Core Provider Agreement for direct FFS billing; distinguish that billing-provider role from the associate servicing role.

Which taxonomy and claim note apply?

The outpatient table on page 43 specifies, from January 1, 2026, an associate-specific taxonomy or 101Y00000X for Medicaid-only LMHP associate claims. For dual-eligible clients it specifies the associate-specific taxonomy and the note LMHP associate. Psychological associates use 103T00000X, with the note Psychological associate for dual eligibility. However, a later inpatient-area note on page 74 still says to use 101Y00000X when Medicare coverage exists. These sections are not one consistent universal instruction: use the applicable service section and obtain HCA clarification for a conflicting dual-eligible claim.

Does specialized agency billing use the same NPI rule?

No. Part II pages 84–85 requires specialized mental-health claims to use modifier TG first and clinic billing taxonomy 261QM0801X, with clinic NPI only and no individual servicing NPI. Part I and Part II services must not share the same claim form. A rule for the associate in Part I cannot be copied into the specialized clinic claim.

Does state enrollment settle an MCO contract?

No. This article explains HCA’s state framework, reviewed October 30, 2026. It does not certify a Molina, Wellpoint, UHC or other MCO roster or contract. Apply the covered service, setting and member’s responsible payer before selecting the claim pathway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every associate claim use a supervisor NPI?

No. Part I associate registration uses the associate’s servicing NPI; Part II specialized claims use clinic-only identity.

Are ordinary student interns included in the associate rule?

The named associate pathway does not establish that. Pending-license practice provisions are also distinct from student status.
