A limited yes for this specialized program
Rhode Island Medicaid recognizes supervised interns in its Sexual Abuse Evaluation and Treatment Program for eligible children and families. This is not general outpatient psychotherapy permission.
Who qualifies?
Interns must attend an accredited behavioral-science master’s or doctoral program. A Qualified-level provider directly supervises them, signs all documented work, participates in co-therapy including evaluation, and observes treatment. Graduate status alone is not the intern category.
Who may supervise?
Qualified providers need independent Rhode Island licensure, Medicaid certification, specified recent clinical experience and specialized training. The policy also requires relevant continuing education and experience for supervisors. A license alone is insufficient.
Codes do not settle the renderer
The program lists H0031 with HO/HP, individual H0004 with HR plus HO/HP, and group H0004 with HQ plus HO/HP; all require prior authorization. It does not establish whose rendering NPI applies to every intern arrangement. Do not invent a supervisor-NPI substitution.
