Does Samaritan accept licensed psychologist associates?
Samaritan Health Plans lists psychologist associates among practitioners eligible to be considered participating providers in its September 2026 manual. For Oregon employer PPO patients, that is a positive participation pathway for the actual licensed credential—not blanket permission for any prelicensed therapist to bill under a supervisor. Covered treatment still depends on credentialing, the clinician’s authorized scope, the contract and the member’s benefits.
How does that relate to outpatient mental-health treatment?
The 2026 large-group PPO certificate covers medically necessary mental-health treatment, including outpatient services. Its mental-health provider definition requires Samaritan credentialing, applicable licensure and eligibility for reimbursement under the contract and Oregon law. Read that benefit together with the manual’s named psychologist-associate category: participation is possible, but the documents do not guarantee payment for every psychotherapy service an associate proposes to perform.
Which Oregon associate credential is this?
Oregon’s psychologist-associate provisions preserve licenses issued before January 1, 2022. They allow specified psychological functions, including counseling, under periodic direct supervision by a Board-licensed psychologist. The Board may separately authorize practice without that supervision. This is a licensed, grandfathered category; it is not interchangeable with a psychology resident, student intern, professional counselor associate or marriage and family therapist associate.
What supervision is required?
For a licensed psychologist associate who remains subject to supervision, the Oregon Board’s continued-supervision rule places day-to-day supervision with the supervising psychologist, including face-to-face consultation appropriate to the work. Confirm the clinician’s actual Board status and authorized functions. Samaritan’s participation list does not expand that clinical scope or approve an otherwise unqualified supervisor.
Does this allow students or unlicensed graduates?
These sources do not establish a Samaritan employer PPO billing pathway for psychology students, unlicensed graduates or other associate registrations. Their absence from this specific answer is not a blanket payer denial. A graduate cannot use the licensed psychologist-associate category merely because a psychologist supervises the work.
Whose NPI should appear on the claim?
The cited participation and benefit provisions do not provide a psychologist-associate-specific rendering-NPI, supervising-provider field or modifier instruction. Do not infer that the supervisor should replace the person who performed the service. Obtain the submission requirements for the contracted clinician and product before choosing claim fields.
Which plans does this answer cover?
The benefit discussion here is limited to the 2026 Samaritan large-group employer PPO certificate. The shared provider manual also discusses IHN-CCO and Medicare Advantage, but their coverage and enrollment rules are separate. An employer PPO participation category does not establish permission for those products, a different employer certificate or every service setting.
Before treating a covered patient
Verify the active psychologist-associate license and any supervision requirement, confirm Samaritan participation for that clinician, and check the patient’s certificate, medically necessary service and any required authorization. The PPO certificate says some outpatient mental-health services require prior authorization. Eligibility to be considered for the network is not confirmation that an individual clinician is already contracted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Samaritan list psychologist associates as eligible providers?
Yes. Its September 2026 manual names psychologist associates as eligible to be considered participating providers. Individual credentialing, lawful scope, the contract and member benefits still apply.
Can a new unlicensed graduate use this category?
Not on this evidence. Oregon’s licensed psychologist-associate provisions preserve licenses issued before January 1, 2022; they are not a general student or new-graduate pathway.
Must claims use the supervising psychologist’s rendering NPI?
The cited sources do not establish that instruction. Confirm the product-specific claim requirements rather than substituting a supervisor’s NPI by assumption.
