Can Licensed MFT, CSW, CPC and ADC Interns Bill Hometown Health?

Can licensed behavioral health interns bill Hometown Health?

Yes, conditionally. Hometown Health’s 2026 Administrative Guidelines name licensed behavioral health interns with MFT, CSW, CPC and ADC specialties in its credentialing and billing requirements. For services they perform under that arrangement, claims use the servicing intern’s own NPI—not the NPI of the practice’s TIN owner.

The intern must meet Hometown Health’s credentialing and re-credentialing requirements and be attached to a specific contracted TIN. This is a licensed-intern participation and claim-identity rule, not permission for any unlicensed graduate or practicum student to bill through a supervisor.

Which licenses and services does the rule cover?

The manual expressly identifies licensed interns in marriage and family therapy (MFT), clinical social work (CSW), clinical professional counseling (CPC), and alcohol and drug counseling (ADC). It does not say that every listed specialty can perform every psychotherapy code. The service must fit the clinician’s actual license, applicable supervision requirements, the member’s benefits and the contracted arrangement.

The payer passage does not supply a profession-by-profession clinical supervisor matrix or independently waive Nevada licensing supervision. Credentialing as an intern and satisfying the licensing board’s clinical supervision requirements are separate checks.

Whose NPI goes on the claim?

The current manual’s Physician’s Role as a Contracted Provider section, printed page 78, requires credentialed practice members to bill services under the NPI of the servicing provider rather than the TIN owner. A supervisor’s ownership of the group is therefore not a reason to replace the licensed intern’s servicing NPI.

The manual separately describes supervisor billing for paraprofessionals who do not require credentialing, giving RBTs, BCaBAs and physical therapy assistants as examples. That exception is not the licensed behavioral health intern rule. Do not apply an ABA or physical-therapy exception to a psychotherapy intern.

What changes when the intern becomes fully licensed or changes groups?

Hometown Health’s provider credentialing FAQ directs practices to report license changes on office letterhead and refers potential claims reprocessing to the manual’s Over/Under Payment section. A license update is not automatic retroactive approval for every prior claim.

The manual also says providers leaving a contracted arrangement are treated as terminated from that network arrangement; a new contract request is reviewed under payer policy. Keep the clinician’s credentialing, current license and contracted TIN aligned rather than assuming participation follows the clinician unchanged.

Does this approve students, Medicare or every employer plan?

No. The cited rule names licensed interns. It does not establish an ordinary student or unlicensed-graduate psychotherapy pathway, a supervision modifier or a universal reimbursement percentage.

This article explains Hometown Health’s network administrative rule. It does not establish independent Medicare enrollment eligibility, a Medicare incident-to pathway, or identical benefits across Senior Care Plus, commercial and self-funded arrangements. Identify the exact member plan and applicable contract; the manual’s recognition of a licensed intern is not a guarantee that a particular service is covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a licensed behavioral health intern use a supervisor’s NPI for Hometown Health?

The cited licensed-intern rule requires the servicing provider’s own NPI, not the TIN owner’s. The separate paraprofessional supervisor-billing exception does not replace that rule.

Which intern specialties does Hometown Health name?

The manual names licensed behavioral health interns in MFT, CSW, CPC and ADC specialties. Credentialing, contracted TIN, license scope, supervision and covered-service conditions still apply.

Does this rule cover an unlicensed student?

The cited passage covers licensed interns and does not establish ordinary practicum-student or unlicensed-graduate psychotherapy billing permission.

Reviewed October 30, 2026. The payer’s announcements link the revised Administrative Guidelines effective March 1, 2026. Printed page 78 retains the named licensed-intern and servicing-NPI requirements. March 1 is the manual revision date, not a claim that the intern pathway first began then. The older January 2026 version also contains the rule.
