Does Liberty HealthShare Share Supervised Psychotherapy Bills?
By Bomi Health • October 30, 2026
No under the reviewed mental-health sharing provision. Liberty HealthShare’s 2026 Sharing Guidelines, effective August 1, 2026, exclude charges for psychiatric or psychological counseling. Supervision does not create an exception to that service exclusion. Liberty HealthShare is a healthcare sharing ministry, not health insurance.
Sections
What does the current mental-health exclusion cover?
Section IV.B.28 lists psychiatric and psychological counseling among medical expenses not eligible for sharing. Its list also includes psychological testing, mental-health treatment, medication and hospitalization, along with several specifically named mental-health needs. This answers whether those bills qualify for sharing; it is not a finding that a particular associate license is unlawful or that every service from that clinician is prohibited.
Does the list of LCSWs, LMHCs, LPCs and MSWs change the answer?
No. The definitions section lists those credentials among practitioner categories. A practitioner definition identifies a type of provider; it does not remove a separate service exclusion. It also does not establish a state-specific supervised-practice rule for an MSW graduate, associate or student.
Can the practice bill under a supervisor instead?
The reviewed guideline does not give a supervisor-NPI or modifier exception for excluded counseling. Changing the name on a bill does not establish sharing eligibility. There is no supported claims recipe here for converting a supervised psychotherapy session into an eligible medical expense.
Which date and program does this answer address?
This answer concerns the base medical-sharing exclusion in the currently linked 2026 Sharing Guidelines, effective August 1, 2026. The same document separately addresses Liberty Assist for members age 65 and older, including Medicare-secondary conditions, and dental and vision programs. Do not extrapolate the base provision into every separate program. Confirm the member’s actual program and the terms applicable to the expense. Separate discount or support services, if offered, should not be described as reimbursement of an outside therapist’s bill. Voluntary sharing is not an insurance promise or a guarantee that medical bills will be paid.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Liberty HealthShare pay for psychotherapy performed by an associate?
Its reviewed August 2026 guidelines exclude psychiatric and psychological counseling costs from sharing. That is a service-level exclusion, not a separate ban based on associate status.
Does the MSW entry in the glossary authorize supervised billing?
No. The practitioner glossary does not override the mental-health exclusion or establish state licensure, supervision or rendering-NPI rules.
Is Liberty HealthShare health insurance?
No. It is a healthcare sharing ministry. Its sharing terms and any separate services must not be presented as an insurance benefit or guaranteed payment.
