Does Curative Allow Supervisory Billing for Associate Therapists?

By Bomi Team • October 29, 2026

The public Curative materials reviewed do not establish permission for an associate counselor, social-work supervisee or MFT associate to bill under a supervisor. They also do not establish a blanket prohibition. The missing evidence is the applicable product’s exact clinician eligibility and supervisor-rendering exception, if any. A group agreement or Cigna network logo does not supply it. Reviewed October 29, 2026.

Does the Cigna wrap network make an associate eligible?

Curative’s provider resources announce a January 1, 2026 change from the Aetna/First Health wrap network to the Cigna Healthcare PPO Network or the Curative Wrap Solution, which includes HealthSmart Preferred Network. Curative describes Cigna as an independent company and the access as a contractual shared-administration arrangement.

Curative provider resources and network notice

For a supervised-therapy review, this means an older network reference needs a date check. Do not carry an Aetna-related assumption forward solely because it appeared on an earlier card. Equally, the new Cigna logo does not establish that a Cigna supervisory policy governs the Curative member’s product. Determine which contract and benefit plan apply on the service date.

Read the current manual with the agreement

The provider manual linked from Curative’s resources page on the review date is the October 8, 2026 file. Section 2 explains that wrap-network markets may move to Curative direct networks with 30 days’ notice to providers and website updates. Following that notice, the manual says the Curative agreements govern and Cigna PPO access ends for that transition.

Keep the notice and agreement that actually apply to the practice; a general manual statement does not prove that a particular market has transitioned. For a group with both direct and wrap participation, check the exact product rather than selecting whichever contract seems more favorable. Prior service dates require the documents in force then.

Can an associate counselor, social worker or MFT credential individually?

Section 9 names participating practitioner categories, including psychologists and master’s-level clinical social workers. It does not establish a state-by-state associate counselor, social-work supervisee or MFT associate exception. A broad professional category is not proof that a particular provisional credential is eligible, and an individual credentialing requirement does not itself answer whether supervised billing is allowed.

These are general participation requirements. They do not establish that every associate or provisional license can be independently credentialed, or that every noncredentialed clinician may bill through a supervisor. The public materials reviewed here do not supply a complete, state-by-state list of permitted supervisee and supervisor designations. Treat an unaddressed designation as unresolved, not as a payer prohibition.

Resolve the claim identity before filing

Section 7 lists rendering or servicing NPI separately from billing or pay-to NPI and tax identification. That distinction matters when a group treats a member: having a valid group billing identity does not answer whose NPI belongs in the rendering field. Do not replace the treating clinician with a supervisor merely to satisfy a claim edit.

For a proposed supervised arrangement, obtain written guidance tied to the product, state, service and exact license designation. It should explain whether individual credentialing is available, whether a supervisory exception exists, which supervisor credentials and participation status are required, whether the associate must be rostered, and what documentation must be retained. Obtain the rendering identifier and any modifier instructions explicitly.

State supervision requirements still need a separate check. A documented professional relationship, degree requirement, scope-of-practice restriction or board approval is not proven by a payer directory. Psychiatric advanced-practitioner collaboration also should not be treated as the same arrangement as an associate counselor’s supervised experience.

What can a practice conclude for a particular license?

This public review does not establish nationwide supervisory-billing permission, out-of-network permission or a uniform rule across Curative products. Curative’s public payment-policy index is another place to check for an applicable service policy, but absence of a specific associate rule there is not proof that no exception exists. Preserve any practice-specific written answer in its own context and do not generalize it to other contracts.

Curative payment-policy index

A useful final record connects the member product, applicable network agreement, clinician designation, supervision requirements and claim protocol for the same service date. Until those pieces agree, report the gap precisely rather than relying on network branding or past payment as permission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Curative’s Cigna wrap network automatically adopt Cigna supervisory-billing rules?

The network notice establishes shared-network access. It does not itself establish which supervisory-billing policy applies to a Curative product. Verify the actual agreement and written product-specific instructions.

Does a Curative group agreement settle the rendering NPI for an associate’s services?

No. The manual distinguishes rendering or servicing NPI from billing or pay-to identity. The proposed supervised arrangement needs its own eligibility and claim-field instructions.
