Can an LAMFT or LGSW bill Aspirus Medicare Advantage?
Not as a billable practitioner under the categories in Aspirus Health Plan’s August 1, 2026 Medicare Advantage Provider Manual. Printed page 25 explicitly places Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapists (LAMFTs) and Licensed Graduate Social Workers (LGSWs) in its non-billable practitioner list. A practice should not treat either credential as an approved individual billing category simply because a supervisor participates with Aspirus.
This answers the individual practitioner question. The cited section does not establish a supervisor-NPI exception for these therapists, nor does it settle every institutional or incident-to arrangement. If the proposed model depends on a facility or supervising clinician billing for another person’s work, the applicable service and claim arrangement remains unverified by these sources.
Which mental health professionals are listed for credentialing?
Printed page 24 separately lists Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists and Licensed Professional Counselors as requiring credentialing, with a Medicare-certified-only qualification for each. It also lists Licensed Psychologists, Wisconsin Licensed Clinical Social Workers and Certified Independent Clinical Social Workers, and Michigan Licensed Master Social Workers. These are the manual’s categories and state qualifications; a similar-sounding provisional or associate license is not interchangeable with them.
Being on that list is not automatic approval or a guarantee of payment. Aspirus’s current Medicare Advantage network page requires the applicable contracting and credentialing steps. Each practitioner has an individual credentialing approval date, even when several practitioners work for the same group.
Does “not requiring credentialing” mean an associate can bill?
No. The manual has separate lists for practitioners who require credentialing, practitioners who do not require credentialing, and non-billable practitioners. LAMFT and LGSW appear in the third list. The existence of a process for adding a non-credentialed practitioner does not move these two therapist categories into a billable category.
Can a group use the supervisor’s NPI or a modifier?
The reviewed Aspirus Medicare Advantage materials do not give an LAMFT- or LGSW-specific supervisor-rendering-NPI instruction or modifier. They also do not establish a general student or unlicensed graduate psychotherapy billing pathway. A supervisor’s license, a group contract or a general Medicare incident-to concept does not by itself supply the missing plan-specific answer.
For a proposed exception, ask Aspirus to identify the current policy for the exact clinician credential, service, practice setting and date of service, including who must be reported as rendering. Until that arrangement is established, do not budget ordinary associate visits as independently billable Aspirus Medicare Advantage visits.
Which Aspirus products and dates does this cover?
This article covers Aspirus Health Plan Medicare Advantage. Its provider website separates Medicare Advantage resources from Individual and Group resources, and its non-contracted-provider page identifies Medicare Advantage payer ID 36483. That identifier helps identify the product; it is not a license permission. These findings do not establish the rules for Aspirus individual or employer plans, another insurer’s Medicare Advantage plan, or state Medicaid.
Reviewed October 30, 2026 against the currently linked manual dated August 1, 2026 and the current Medicare Advantage network resources. August 1 is the manual version date, not proof that the named practitioner restriction first began then. Earlier dates of service need the policy that applied at that time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Aspirus Medicare Advantage list LAMFTs and LGSWs as billable practitioners?
No. The August 1, 2026 manual lists both as non-billable practitioners. That is a named practitioner-category restriction; the cited section does not determine every facility or incident-to arrangement.
Can I bill an associate’s therapy under the supervisor’s NPI?
The reviewed Aspirus Medicare Advantage materials do not establish an LAMFT- or LGSW-specific supervisor-NPI exception or modifier. Obtain the applicable service- and setting-specific rule before relying on that arrangement.
Are fully licensed LMFTs and LPCs eligible for credentialing?
The manual lists LMFTs and LPCs among practitioners requiring credentialing, with a Medicare-certified-only qualification for each. Actual participation still requires the applicable Aspirus contracting and credentialing approval.
