Can Mississippi LSWs and LMSWs Enroll With BCBSMS?
By George Ruan • October 30, 2026
For Mississippi LSWs and LMSWs, BCBSMS’s current application checklist gives a limited answer: they are not eligible to participate in the BCBSMS or AHS networks, but may request enrollment to render services at in-network benefit levels for eligible Federal Employee Program (FEP) and out-of-state BlueCard members. That exception is not automatic enrollment or a promise that every supervised session will be reimbursed.
The checklist answers network participation and a separate enrollment opportunity. It does not establish a general route to bill an LSW’s or LMSW’s therapy under an LCSW supervisor’s NPI. Clinical supervision, payer enrollment and claim attribution remain different requirements.

What does the current social-work checklist say?
The payer’s Licensed Clinical Social Worker checklist expressly distinguishes LCSWs from LSWs and LMSWs. LCSW applicants need current, unrestricted Mississippi licensure through the named state board and the other application requirements. Adding clinical supervision does not remove the checklist’s LSW/LMSW network-participation exclusion.
The same footnote allows LSWs and LMSWs to submit an enrollment request for eligible FEP and out-of-state Blue Cross Blue Shield members. Keep those member categories explicit: the text does not extend that exception to all BCBSMS members or convert the clinician into a participating BCBSMS/AHS network provider.
Enrollment is a request, not blanket payment approval
Before relying on the exception, establish whether the member belongs to the specified FEP or out-of-state BlueCard category, whether BCBSMS has accepted the clinician’s enrollment and whether the proposed service is covered under that member’s benefits. The checklist does not specify qualifying psychotherapy codes, supervision arrangements, a modifier or billing-versus-rendering NPI fields for this exception.
The exception also does not grant a state scope of practice. An LSW or LMSW must meet the applicable Mississippi practice and supervision requirements independently of what the payer accepts for enrollment. Do not replace that legal analysis with the fact that the payer accepts an enrollment request.
What do LCSW applicants need?
The checklist requires a current CAQH profile, attestation within the past 120 days and permission for BCBSMS to review it. Listed requirements include unrestricted Mississippi licensure, a valid Medicare provider number, sanctions and malpractice review, professional liability coverage, tax-ID documentation and a commercial healthcare practice site. The checklist specifies liability limits of $500,000 per occurrence and $1 million aggregate. Submitting those materials does not itself establish approval.
Does this establish permission for students or counselor associates?
No such conclusion follows from this social-work footnote. It names LSWs and LMSWs for a particular enrollment exception; it does not name unlicensed students or counselor associates. Nor should its network exclusion be restated as a universal prohibition on every supervised behavioral-health service. Other professions and service settings need their own applicable payer requirements.
Which version is this answer based on?
The live BCBSMS provider-network application page currently links this license-specific checklist. The PDF does not display a revision date in its text, so current availability should not be described as a new 2026 policy effective date. This answer uses the current linked checklist, rather than assuming an older, separately hosted behavioral-health criteria sheet remains the governing application standard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an LMSW join the BCBSMS network?
The current LCSW checklist says LSWs and LMSWs are not eligible for BCBSMS or AHS network participation. It separately allows them to request enrollment for in-network benefit levels for eligible FEP and out-of-state BlueCard members.
Does the FEP or BlueCard exception mean every LMSW session is covered?
No. It permits an enrollment request for specified member categories. Individual enrollment acceptance, covered services, benefits and claim instructions remain to be established.
Can an LCSW supervisor’s NPI be used for an LMSW’s session?
The reviewed checklist does not authorize that claim arrangement or specify billing and rendering NPI fields. Required clinical supervision is not proof that the supervisor may be identified as the treating clinician.
Does this checklist cover unlicensed student therapists?
The social-work exception names LSWs and LMSWs, not unlicensed students. It does not establish a student billing pathway or a blanket denial across every service setting.
