Yes: IMCare recognizes clinical trainees for psychotherapy
IMCare lists clinical trainees alongside mental health professionals and tribal certified professionals as eligible psychotherapy providers. Its Mental Health Services manual, revised October 12, 2026, requires a mental health professional to supervise the trainee. This is a conditional Minnesota Medical Assistance pathway, not permission for every unlicensed employee or every Medicare service.
Which students and graduates qualify?
Minnesota Statutes 245I.04, subdivisions 6–7, distinguish three clinical-trainee routes: an accredited graduate-program practicum or internship with the license holder; a graduate complying with the applicable licensing board’s supervised-practice requirements; or a graduate who completed the practicum or internship and is awaiting an exam, results or final licensure decision. Board requirements still apply. A degree, student label or pending license alone does not establish eligibility.
Who supervises, and what must be documented?
The psychotherapy pathway requires a mental health professional. Minnesota’s professional categories include LICSW, LMFT, LPCC and licensed psychologist, as well as the specified psychiatric nursing and physician qualifications. Do not substitute a generic rehabilitation-worker supervisor for this psychotherapy requirement. IMCare requires supervisor review and approval of trainee progress notes according to the supervision plan. The plan must be updated annually and completed for new staff within 30 days. Clinical supervision does not replace licensing-board supervision requirements.
Whose NPI goes on the claim?
IMCare’s ordinary psychotherapy billing section instructs providers to use an 837P and place the treating provider’s NPI on each claim line. The reviewed section does not separately map a nonenrollable clinical trainee to a supervisor’s NPI. Its clinical eligibility statement therefore should not be turned into an automatic supervisor-as-renderer instruction. Resolve that trainee-specific enrollment and claim configuration before submitting the service.
Is HN required for all trainee psychotherapy?
The manual includes HN instructions for specific services, including psychotherapy for crisis. That does not make HN a universal modifier for ordinary 90832, 90834 or 90837 psychotherapy. Use the rule for the actual service. The manual’s GC instruction is separately limited to teaching-hospital services under a supervising physician.
What this answer covers
This answers whether IMCare recognizes a clinical trainee for psychotherapy: yes, subject to the stated supervision and service requirements. Member eligibility, diagnostic assessment, treatment plan, medical necessity, authorization and the billing provider’s arrangement remain necessary. It does not certify a Medicare claim or an independent practice simply because the clinician meets a trainee definition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an IMCare graduate intern provide psychotherapy?
Yes, if the person qualifies as a clinical trainee and provides psychotherapy under a mental health professional’s treatment supervision. Student status alone is insufficient.
Does IMCare require the supervisor NPI on every trainee claim?
The reviewed ordinary psychotherapy section specifies the treating provider NPI but does not give a separate trainee-to-supervisor claim crosswalk. Do not infer a universal substitution.
Does every trainee psychotherapy claim need HN?
No universal HN rule was established for ordinary psychotherapy by the reviewed section. HN appears in specific service instructions, including crisis psychotherapy.
