Does HAP Recognize Michigan LLPs for Credentialing?
By Bomi Health • October 30, 2026
Yes, HAP’s currently linked credentialing policy expressly lists Michigan limited license psychologists (LLPs) and their education requirements. That is a named credentialing pathway, not automatic acceptance or permission to bill supervised psychotherapy. The same policy also requires Medicare participation, leaving an important qualification to resolve for an individual applicant.
Sections
What does HAP require for the LLP category?
Printed page 27 names a current Michigan limited license psychologist license and a master’s or doctoral psychology degree from an institution approved by the Michigan Board of Psychology. The surrounding standards include unrestricted Michigan licensure. Naming LLP separately matters, but it does not authorize every temporary credential, student or other profession’s associate license.
Why is Medicare participation still a qualification?
Printed page 28 of the same policy requires eligibility to participate in Medicare and Medicaid, participation in Medicare, and absence from the Medicare Opt-Out List. HAP’s current individual-enrollment page also asks applicants to obtain a Medicare number and affiliate with a participating group. The reviewed material does not explain a blanket LLP exception. Committee review provisions do not, by themselves, prove that HAP has waived these requirements for an applicant.
Can an LLP bill psychotherapy under a supervising psychologist?
The credentialing criterion alone does not establish a rendering-NPI rule, supervisor substitution, modifier or payment entitlement. It also does not change Michigan supervision law. Obtain the applicable participation decision and service-specific billing requirements before treating the named LLP category as approval to submit a claim.
Does this apply to every HAP product and practice?
The policy marks several product categories, including commercial and Medicare Advantage, but the applicant’s actual network and product participation still matter. HAP’s enrollment page says a practice must receive its effective-date notice before treating members. A facility arrangement, HAP CareSource Medicaid participation and individual commercial enrollment must not be treated as interchangeable.
Which policy version is current?
HAP’s current Become a Provider page links a file whose name says August 2026. The policy itself is number 18775928: effective July 2025, last approved and revised August 2025, with August 2026 listed as the next review. Those are the document’s dates; the filename is not proof of a new August 2026 policy. Reviewed October 30, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does HAP list Michigan LLPs?
Yes. Its current linked policy names LLPs with a current Michigan license and a qualifying master’s or doctoral psychology degree. All other applicable credentialing requirements still apply.
Does the LLP listing waive Medicare participation?
The reviewed policy does not state that waiver. Medicare participation appears in both the policy and the individual-enrollment instructions, so the applicant’s participation decision remains important.
Can an LLP use a supervisor’s NPI based on this policy?
The cited credentialing material does not establish that claims arrangement. Named credential eligibility, lawful supervision and reimbursement are separate questions.
