Yes: PLPC, PLMFT and LMSW therapy is covered, but independent billing is not

AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana expressly covers listed outpatient mental health services delivered by provisionally licensed professional counselors (PLPCs), provisionally licensed marriage and family therapists (PLMFTs), and licensed master social workers (LMSWs). Its October 2026 Claim Filing Instructions require UA for PLPC/PLMFT services and U4 for LMSW services in the expansion table. These clinicians are rendering providers, not independent billing providers.

Reviewed October 30, 2026. This answer concerns AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana Medicaid and the named services in its mental-health-professional expansion section, printed pages 110–112. It does not establish a rule for another AmeriHealth product or another state's plan.

Which therapy codes does the plan list?

The table includes 90832, 90834 and 90837 for individual psychotherapy; 90846 and 90847 for family psychotherapy; and 90853 for group psychotherapy. It also lists 90791, interactive-complexity add-on 90785, and crisis codes 90839/90840. Inclusion is not a guarantee that every session meets the code's clinical, time, age, authorization or benefit requirements.

For the listed services, use U4 for an LMSW and UA for a PLPC or PLMFT. The table distinguishes child and adult rows for some codes. It is not a general modifier rule for every behavioral health service: specialized programs, telehealth and coordination of benefits may require additional instructions.

Whose NPI belongs in the rendering role?

The plan describes PLPCs, PLMFTs and LMSWs as rendering providers only and says independently billed claims from them will be denied. A practice therefore needs an eligible billing arrangement for the service while identifying the actual clinician in the rendering role. Required supervision is not, by itself, an instruction to replace that clinician with the supervisor as renderer.

The section does not supply a universal supervisor-NPI field instruction for all claim formats or practice arrangements. Confirm the clinician's enrollment, association with the billing provider and applicable claim format before filing. Do not turn the prohibition on independent billing into a prohibition on these clinicians performing covered therapy.

Does this allow unlicensed students or any graduate working under supervision?

No blanket student or unlicensed-graduate permission is established by this section. Its affirmative list names three Louisiana license categories, and each clinician must work within the relevant licensing board's scope. A counseling student, MSW student or person awaiting a license does not become a PLPC, PLMFT or LMSW merely by having a supervisor.

Other Louisiana Medicaid pathways may name other professionals or trainees. Those need their own service-specific authority; they should not be added to this payer's UA/U4 outpatient answer by analogy. The same distinction applies to CPST and specialized DBT requirements.

What should a practice verify before starting?

Verify the patient's AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana eligibility for the date of service, the clinician's exact current license and required supervision, and the practice's approved billing and enrollment arrangement. Then check the service code, authorization, age requirements, modifier and any telehealth or other-insurance instructions. The payer's published allowance answers the license question; it does not independently establish a particular clinician's network status or a particular patient's benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an LMSW provide therapy to AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana members?

Yes, its October 2026 instructions cover the listed LMSW services with U4. The LMSW must work within Louisiana licensing scope and be a rendering provider, not bill independently.

What modifier applies to PLPC and PLMFT therapy?

UA applies to PLPC and PLMFT services in the plan's mental-health-professional expansion table. Check the exact code and any additional service-specific instructions.

Should every supervised claim use the supervisor as rendering provider?

No. This section names PLPCs, PLMFTs and LMSWs as rendering providers while prohibiting independent billing. It does not establish a universal supervisor-as-renderer instruction.

Does the policy cover all unlicensed students?

The cited section does not establish that permission. It names PLPC, PLMFT and LMSW license categories; other trainees and services need separate supporting authority.
