Does CHA Enroll Supervised Therapists in Indiana and Michigan?

By Bomi Health • October 30, 2026

Community Health Alliance (CHA) requires behavioral-health applicants to be licensed for independent practice in every state covered by their contract. A therapist whose provisional or limited credential still requires supervision does not meet that published individual credentialing requirement. This answers who can enroll in the network; it does not establish that every service performed under supervision is excluded from every employer plan using CHA.

Which Indiana and Michigan licenses does CHA accept?

For Indiana, CHA lists psychologists with a Health Service Provider in Psychology endorsement, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors. For Michigan, it lists psychologists, master’s social workers with a clinical specialty, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors.

Read those categories together with the independent-practice requirement. A similar title, a graduate degree or a supervisor’s participation is not a substitute for the applicant’s own qualifying license. CHA also requires the license to be in good standing, unrestricted and not on probation.

Does supervision make a provisional therapist eligible?

The published requirements do not offer supervision as an alternative to independent licensure for individual network credentialing. They also do not identify a student or unlicensed-intern enrollment pathway. That is narrower than a reimbursement denial: the page does not decide whether a particular facility, group or employer benefit has a separate supervised-service arrangement.

What else must an applicant provide?

Applicants need appropriate accredited education or training, professional liability coverage at the stated minimum, a complete current CAQH application, five years of work history with explanations for longer gaps, and emergency availability or coverage arrangements. Meeting these prerequisites is not the same as receiving a contract or a payment guarantee.

Can a group bill therapy under a supervisor’s NPI?

These credentialing criteria do not authorize that claim method. They give no supervised-therapy rendering-NPI substitution or modifier instruction. CHA is a regional physician-hospital network serving Indiana and southwest Michigan; its ID-card rules distinguish repricing and utilization-management arrangements. A network logo alone therefore cannot settle the member’s benefit or the employer plan’s billing rules.

For a supervised therapist, obtain the actual plan’s rule for the treating clinician and service before choosing a rendering NPI. Keep individual network eligibility, lawful clinical supervision and reimbursement conditions separate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a supervised provisional therapist enroll individually with CHA?

The published individual criteria require independent practice licensure. They do not provide a supervision exception for provisional, limited-license or student applicants.

Does that prohibit all supervised therapy claims?

No such blanket conclusion follows from the credentialing page. A facility or employer plan’s service and reimbursement rules require separate evidence.

Does CHA instruct therapists to bill under the supervisor’s NPI?

The reviewed requirements do not provide that instruction or a supervised-therapy modifier. Do not infer a claim protocol from network participation.
