Does Scripps Health Plan Cover Therapy With AMFTs, ASWs and APCCs?

Does Scripps cover supervised associate therapy?
Yes, conditionally under the reviewed 2026 Scripps Health Plan HMO benefits. Its outpatient mental-health and substance-use benefit names associate marriage and family therapists, associate clinical social workers and associate professional clinical counselors. That is evidence of covered provider categories, not an instruction to bill every associate’s services under a supervisor’s NPI.
Which trainees are named?
The outpatient provision also includes psychology trainees, registered psychologist assistants, marriage and family therapist trainees, and professional clinical counselor trainees. It does not establish eligibility for every student, every unlicensed graduate or a social-work student merely because someone supervises them. Use the clinician’s actual registration or training category and lawful clinical role.
Carelon participation matters
The July 29, 2026 revision of the Evidence of Coverage identifies Carelon as the behavioral-health administrator. Routine non-emergency care generally must use its participating network; the EOC separately addresses exceptions, including emergency, urgent, crisis and plan-arranged out-of-network care. A named license category does not itself establish a particular clinician’s participation.
Scripps announced the Magellan-to-Carelon transition for April 1, 2026, initially subject to regulatory approval. Its current transparency page and revised EOC now identify Carelon. Do not rely on an older Magellan directory or assume a former network agreement proves current participation.
What goes on the claim?
The reviewed benefit documents do not resolve whether an associate or supervisor belongs in the rendering-provider field, or supply a modifier for these visits. Obtain the applicable Carelon/Scripps claim instructions for the participating clinician and practice before submitting. Neither supervision nor the supervisor’s ownership of the practice answers that question.
This answer concerns the Scripps Health Plan HMO described in the 2026 EOC, not every insurance product administered by Scripps Health Plan Services, a Medicare arrangement, or every Carelon client. Benefits, medical necessity, lawful scope of practice and participation remain separate requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AMFT, ASW or APCC provide covered Scripps HMO therapy?
The reviewed 2026 Scripps HMO outpatient benefits name these associate categories. The actual service and clinician still need to satisfy the plan’s benefit, participation and clinical requirements.
Does Scripps cover therapy by any supervised student?
No blanket student rule was established. The EOC names particular psychology, marriage-and-family-therapy and professional-clinical-counseling trainee categories; do not expand that list to every student or graduate.
Should an associate’s Scripps claim use the supervisor’s NPI?
That claim-field rule remains unresolved in the reviewed benefit documents. Confirm the applicable rendering instructions; the benefit-category list alone does not authorize supervisor-NPI substitution.
