Does CCAH cover AMFT, ASW and APCC therapy?

Does CCAH recognize supervised associates for therapy claims?
Yes, within specified benefits. Central California Alliance for Health names AMFTs, ASWs, APCCs and registered psychological associates in its supervised-provider HL billing category. Its instructions apply from July 1, 2025, to non-specialty behavioral health for Medi-Cal and Alliance Care IHSS members, plus specialty mental health for IHSS. They do not establish the same associate pathway for TotalCare Medicare D-SNP.
Which modifier applies?
The Alliance identifies HL for supervised interns or trainees and lists those four associate categories as examples. For the covered behavioral-health claims, an appropriate professional-level modifier is required; omission leads to denial. A graduate degree alone does not make HO the right choice for an associate whose services fall under HL. The table does not resolve eligibility for every unregistered student.
What therapy benefit is covered?
The October 2026 Provider Manual, page 93, covers individual and group psychotherapy and family therapy within Medi-Cal non-specialty mental health. It states that psychotherapy and comprehensive diagnostic evaluations do not require prior authorization. This is a benefit-specific authorization rule, not permission for every clinician to provide every service. The manual separately requires CCS-paneled behavioral-health providers for the CCS benefit.
Does the supervisor replace the associate as rendering provider?
The reviewed Alliance instructions do not give an associate-specific rendering-NPI substitution rule. The manual, page 124, says the group bills Medi-Cal for its enrolled rendering providers. That general group-billing rule does not identify which clinician belongs in an associate claim's rendering field. HL describes the professional level; it does not itself choose the billing or rendering NPI.
What must a practice settle before filing?
Confirm the member's exact benefit, the associate's participation under the group, the supervision arrangement and the Alliance's instructions for identifying the actual clinician and supervisor. Ask specifically which NPI goes in each claim field; do not copy another payer's supervisor-rendering convention. The public HL table supplies a useful positive answer about named supervised categories, while leaving that operational detail unresolved.
Keep county specialty services separate
For Medi-Cal members, county mental-health plans remain responsible for specialty mental-health services. An Alliance non-specialty claim and a county specialty claim are different billing paths. IHSS's broader specialty benefit should not be transferred to a Medi-Cal member merely because both products use the Alliance name.
